My main hard drive is going down. I'm installing a 250gb SATA drive to replace it and reinstalling xp on it. Is there anything special I have to do to install the SATA drive?

Nope. Infact when you're putting in a sata drive you don't even need to switch off the pc.

Depending on the sata controller you might need a driver disk for installing windows, but only if windows setup doesn't recognize the drive.

you only need the driver disk if you want the setup to detect the controller before installing windows
like if you want to install windows on that sata disk through the controller, which is not a very good idea
i always just install windows without giving it any special drivers and then install them manually in windows to have more control over the process

Depending on how I want the OS to access my drives, I always hit F6 @ preinstall with my RAID/AHCI drivers.

Well I had BIG probs on my EVGA 680i, and thats because they labeled the SATA sockets wrong in the manual. Had to go to a forum to find that out! I am running a Striped 0 and wanted to use socket 1-2, as it turned out I was plugging in to socket 4-6 or something and the BIOS would only show 1 HD (half the size obviously)...took me a good hour of wanking around until i found out. But thats only if you want to run Raid, and then you also need to install the drivers before you install windows.

you dont need to install drivers before you install XP, windows detects it just fine, at least with western digital. all my drives are OEM and work right after plugging them in.

If I want NCQ and Hot Swapping for my SATA hard drives, I have to set the SATA channel to AHCI mode in BIOS and have the appropriate drivers disk before hitting F6 when first installing Windows.
If I want RAID, I have to have BIOS set to support RAID and have the appropriate RAID drivers disk before hitting F6 when first installing Windows.
If I have the BIOS set to force the SATA channel to act in IDE mode, then I require no drivers and can go ahead and install Windows - however, if I change BIOS @ a later date to allow AHCI/RAID then Windows will not boot.
GigaByte 965P motherboard / C2D 6400 @ 3.2GHz / 2GB DDR2 800MHz / 4 x 320GB SATA II Barracudas, 1 x 74GB WD Raptor / BFG 7900GT
