|
 |
Okay, I have 5 computers at home and I just ordered a new notebook that will be wireless.
I don't want to put my 5 computers on wireless network,I prefer wired for them but I would like to have small wireless signal for my laptop around the house.
Question: Is it possible for the two (wires and wireless) to coexist ? Is there any cheap solutions to it like a USB small emitter or something.
Thanks
Tom.

It's super easy to do. All you have to do is get a wireless router and plug it in somewhere in your network so the laptop uses it's wireless and all the other PCs use the cables they're using already.

Wireless card into another machine.. ad-hoc network to that.. bridge the connection to the wired port (or internet share).. DONE!
Or buy an accesspoint / wireless router..

Thats exactly what I have going on on my home network.
DSL Modem connects to my linksys befsx41
I have 2 PCs and a network printer connected to it, and then my wireless linksys wrt54GL connected to it. Its got a spare cable attached to it for when I want to wire my laptop in at my desk, and my media center PC, 2 laptops and Wii all connect to it wirelessly.
If you want to use the logging features on your wireless router though you'll need to connect it to your wired router via the wan port and not just a switch port, otherwise traffic doesn't actually get routed so the logging won't kick in.

I bought a Linksys WRT54G aswell.
Tell me if my setup is allright.
My main internet connection plugs into the Wireless rooter, all of my 3 other computers plugs into him aswell. I could use that router only but I want a spare wire around for the laptop or any other computers I might have to repair w\o wireless. So I plugged the last free wired port of the wireless rooter to the Wired Linksys router into the "Internet" plug, so my guess is that if I plug any wires into the wired linksys it's gonna work correctly ? Wireless is only for my laptop and Wii.

It will, but you'll need to turn on routing. If its connected to the internet/wan port the router will actually have to route traffic, which means the two routers should have different networks, i.e. your wireless is 192.168.1.1 and your wired is 192.168.2.1. The much easier way in your case is just to plug it into one of the other ports so it just behaves as a switch, much less setup required.

Wich port ? You mean just use one router and plug it into the last free port of the wireless one ?

You've got your 4 regular ports and your internet port on your wired router. Plug the cable into the last free spot on the wireless and plug it in to one of the regular ports on the wired router. It will be much simpler for you doing it that way.
