I recently got a 2nd hand PSP with FW2.5 and not the TA chipset (no gold lettering "ICS003" on RHS of open UMD drive) and was wondering the best way to get it running homebrew and games. I have checked a few forums but am confused as there are so many options - like downgrading to 1.5 (need an unpatched GTA UMD disk? - which I don't have) or using an emulator.
Can anyone give me some tips as to the best way to proceed?

Install the official 2.71 update, then run HEN-D, and next use the generic downgrader from dark alex. Downgrade to 1.5. Finally install the firmware 2.71 SE-C. This is the best sollution.

To update to 2.71, just download the official 2.71 update and put it in the folder MS:\PSP\GAME\UPDATE\EBOOT.PBP. It will appear in the game menu folder the updater. Just run it.

P.S.: Make sure you have battery and a memory stick bigger than 32mb.

You´re portuguese?

Thanks a lot! I got the 2.71 FW from this site - http://www.psphacks.net/files/PSPFirmwares/ - is that okay? (The Sony site only seems to have the latest 3.02 FW).

I'm English Smile

There´s probably no problem, but I only trust QJ.NET site Smile
In the link of the generic dowgrader there is all that you need, including a link to the 2.71 update.
I assumed you were portuguese cuz, in your location you have gaia. It´s the name of a portuguese city Razz

Brilliant - many thanks for helping me out - no way I would have arrived here myself (!) I knew I should have stuck just playing NDS games w the DS-X ;P
That tutorial on downgrading to FW1.5 is great - iust done it ok - had to reset PSP to default values though to get the downgrade to work

Yay just upped to 2.71 SE-C - looks like the author DarkAlex merged parts of FW1.5 and 2.71 together? What a megabrain Very Happy
Just have to suss out how to run homebrew and games now ;P

Glad you made it Smile
To run games you just need to create a folder called ISO in the root of your memory stick and put the isos inside. They will appear in the game menu.
To run homebrew, you just have to copy the folders inculded in each app to MS:\PSP\GAME
or to MS:\PSP\GAME150. The difference between the two is that MS:\PSP\GAME is for homebrew made specifically to firmware 2.71, and MS:\PSP\GAME150 is to homebrew made to firmware 1.50.

Thank you Very Much SuTuRa Very Happy - yes I sussed the ISo loading - I had to go into the recovery menu and configuration -> use no-umd (enable) . I tried using the demo umd disk but it wouldn't cut it. Looks like just running almost everything from the memory stick will also save battery life - not having to spin a UMD disk around - homebrew devs rule !

When I saw that 1st FW flash screen I started to sweat (!) Would it won't it - but thankfully Dark Alex et all are wizards. I can see that it would be very easy to screw this process up without those excellent tutorials ;P

Do you recommend any homebrew or plugins that are useful? I like interesting utility programs to play around with.

Awesome FW this one for just playing the ISOs - I'll start looking at homebrew and that scary devhook later this week ;P Looks like there are emulators out there as well inc PS1 (!?)
Thanks again for the heads-up - I'm no longer a noob just a rank amateur Very Happy

I have devhook 0.51, update 3.01.pbp & some other packages & just want to make sure I'm not going to cock anything up - is it just a case of copying the files to MS root? I have seen forum comments @ qj.net of using a dsxapr program as well but am unsure to take this root.
Installing devhook doesn't need another ROM flash - it is just a program you run off the memory stick? Any help would be very welcome (!)

Yeah! No problem with that... Devhook it´s just an app that runs from memory stick and doesn´t flash anything. Here´s another tutorial on how to do it. The method 1 is really simple to use.

Thanks a million SuTuRa - I tried that guide for devhook 5.1 earlier today but it didn;t work for me.
I got to running the app "3.01 DH FW Installer"/"3.02 DH FW Installer" but never saw the "Press 'X' when prompted." - the PSP screen went black after a while and shutdown.
Do you find any extra benefit in running the latest devhook on your 2.71SE-C FW ?

Sorry for these questions - I am wrapping my head around the process ;P

Wee! Right - DH FW Installer only works when the game folder is set to 1.5 kernel in recovery mode !!

Decent guide here for 3.02FW - http://forums.qj.net/f-psp-homebrew-and-hacks-help-21/t-devhook-51-setup-guide-faq-and-help-thread-easy-installer-12506-81061/page111.html

The main reason to have DH 0.51, is to run some new games that don´t work directly in 2.71 SE. Like MGS: PO. That game only works in DH 3.01 or 3.02.

Gotcha !
Your route to the FW2.7SE-C was great - using devhook seems cumbersome by comparison - I can see the option to load an ISO but can't see it in the Game - Memory Stick or using the Home key to get DevHook up can't run it.
A BIG Thank You for helping me out here Very Happy

Haha - that's why DevHook has it as "UMD Image Emulation" ;P Use for that Demo Disk after all Very Happy Boy these dev;s are tricky (!)
