|

Hello guys. Here is the thing
Im from argentina, as some of you may know, video cards arent as cheap as in usa or europa.
Well... i sold my 7900gt ko sc for 400 dollars and some guy is willing to sell me an msi 7950gx2 (it was only used for 1 month, he bought both 8800gts and gtx) for 450.
You will say that i should get a 8800gts, but that card here is almost 700 dollars and i cant afford it for now, let alone buy a new power supply such as ocz, top power or whatever that is close to 150 to 200 bucks.
So... my doubt is to get that gx2 or a sapphire 1950xtx for 500.
I think ill be able to sell that card in a couple of months here in argentina, so im not worried about it. The thing is, i dont wanna miss games like rainbow 6 or some of the ones coming while i get the money for the 8800gts, which could take me 3 months or so. Besides from time to time i write reviews for an argentinian site and i cant make them with an x300 lol.
Now... most of my friends told that the 1950xtx has a better image quality than the gx2, but from what i saw in these reviews, the nvidia card seems more powerful despite the visual quality. So... what do u think i should buy? ati or nvidia?
Thanx in advance

Yeah, well the reasonalbe thing to do is wait for R600 to see which is better, then wait for prices to go low, then wait for second DX10 generation cards, then wait for prices to go low, then... There's no end to this waiting cycle. If you need a card, get it. I'm not fond of AMD/ATI and their drivers, so I'd go with 7950.
A word on the drivers: Though miles better than they used to be, they are still come way behind Nvidia's. While they are more optimized then the NV ones, almost every driver introduces many incompatabilies with older games. Often they feel like target-specific drivers. Wanna play FEAR now? Get this driver. Want to have some Oblivion fun? Get those. Company of Heroes? These are for you. With NV it also happens, but not so often, and it's fixed quite fast.
Not to sound like NV fanboi, I had a 9800Pro couple of years ago and liked it very much, but it was frustrating at times to have so many issues with drivers.

yea wait a year, I made the dumb mistake of upgrading to the 7900 gto from a 7800 GT. At least its rememdied now because I managed to sell the GTO for a $50 profit....

Pey, can't you in no way find a 8800GTS in a lower price? Buying an older generation card isn't all that recommended at all.

I'd personally would REALLY advice waiting until about mid February, so that's about 2 months away which isn't that bad. Main reason is nvidia will have more chipsets out for their Geforce range by then, and the ATi DirectX 10 card will be out, so other cards prices drop and so forth. Would seriously advice waiting with it being this close to 2nd generation DirectX 10 cards from nvidia and 1st gen from ATi.

here is my opinion , call me a fanboy i dont mind but here it goes .
ATI has best drivers and image quality currently , improving performance every few months by several % .
i found ati to have the past few years faster cards for a cheaper price , yes nvidia usuaully has the new generation out a bit earlier , was the case with 7800 and now 8800 , but if you can wait a month or 2 its well worth it as the comparable ati card will be faster and cheaper , last time proven by the x1900 series .
Now dx10 is not that close around the corner , crysis is out in april they say , and i dont know about any other games getting alot of advertisement for their dx10 features comming out after that , just to say dx10 is out next year but DX9 will still be the most used .
Also question is how much speed do you need at the moment ? i personally have a x800xt that i am more then happy about , it can still play all my new games at 1280* max detail and 8af 4aa without a hick ( fear , bf 2, .. ) means above 30fps ave. So anything faster then that card should last you for a long time even when DX10 is out .
I was thinking personally to get myself a new rig for xmas , but decided to spend it on a wii and other stuff instead since mine still does fine, i did some research though and found the ati x1950pro to be the best bang for the buck at the moment and still blazing fast for 199$
link to the card on newegg
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102061
here is a review , look how it owns the 7900gt ( your old card if i read right )which is 40$ more expensive
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/x1950pro-gf7900gs_17.html
another option for you might be the x1950xt if you really want top speed no matter what, less ram , thats about it , 250$ and by that 130$ cheaper then the x1950xtx
x1950xt

So its up to you how much you can/want to spend , and if you plan to get yourself the top version of the dx10 cards in the summer or so next year , prob tuned follow up versions of the 8800 / r600 i would say save every penny you can and buy yourself a x1950pro , its still an upgrade and very cheap , and then you can spend the saved money ona really nice dx10 card .

1950xtx seems faster from the test ive seen. But i would wait until the next-gen ATI-card comes out (which is Jan/Feb)

I mostly read benchmark-reviews when choosing a new card, dont read just 1 or 2 thou, read alot of them to get a good picture.
