I've been informed that Telewest are rolling out their new 20Mb line soon. With phase two of their system being a 50mb line. The biggest shocker is that the 100mb line is in the testing phase as we speak. Anyone in the Birmingham area or Kent? That's where it's being tested at the moment.

So if they follow the same plan as the last time (before NTL took them over) they should start upgrading peoples lines for free. So expect an upgrade to 10mb if you have a 4mb line, for free. Anything lower should be upgraded to 4mb too.

Good news. 10Mb is so slow these days.

8mbit or maybe 4mb is enough for regular household.

the 100mb is more for business or for HD-video streaming.

I mean.

with 8mb you load a website as fast as a 100mb line.

so that 100mb is only usefull for certain options. But for internet browsing its just overkill Razz

Like you've never downloaded stuff Skid. I get 1.5mb a sec on my 10mb line. Takes about a hour for a dvd sized download. So with a 100mb line I'll get 15mb a sec. So it's not really just for business.

yeah, with newsgroups i get max speed.

but what use is a 100mb line if a website only has 15mb uploadspeed. That's 85mb unused Wink

you get my point? Wink

Not really. I'm talking about download speed. That's the important thing for well downloading. What would I rather have. 1.5mb a sec download, or 15mb a second. Well just ask our Swedish friends on that one.

I'm using 10mb connection and i live in sweden. my highest download speed is like 1.5mb/s but i rarely get it. however the company i get internet from only give internet to thoose who live in my city cause it is a special offer that is cheap and good so i don't got any experience in swedish internet speed and connections.

Even if you have 100Mb it doesn't mean the server your downloading from does... simple as that.

Then you need to get decent servers. Simple as that. Ask Esel Gesi. He'll tell you. Giga news always (well 99% of the time) it does. It's always better to have a faster connection.

Giganews has a dedicated link to NTL, I'm on the 20mbit trial and getting 1.8/1.9 megs a sec (19mbits) right now. For normal servers they never get that close and with NTL's proxy issues web-browsing at prime time is at 1-2mbits.

The 50mbit trials is talk to boost stock IMHO and as a rival to BT's 21cn. I mean my 20mbit only works at 20mbit in the middle of the night, which is just when I download so s'all good.

Got 100mbit just becouse of the download and upload speed, when i surf the internet ofcourse it doesnt do much but when i download a new game on like 3gb in couple of minutes it does big difference.
And 100mbit is so cheap anyway so getting 10mb would cost almost as much.

Wonder if they'll increase the upload speeds (I'm kinda thinking probably not, last I heard there was limitations on the hardware they use to offer over 512k upload without severely hurting their systems). 20mbit sounds nice though for downstream, and if it's a free upgrade that's even better (last time I think they also dropped the prices of their services, such as when I was on 4mb for 50 quid if I remember right it turned into 10mbit for 35 quid per month).

I find my 8mb connection is fine for what I use. I'm with Bulldog, and although I pay alittle more than the norm, they give a good service. Downloading a full dvd can take an hour or so, but i'm from the 56k generation so i can quite happily live with that wait. I remember downloading full cd's on 56k - dear oh dear, why Razz

I hear you Horrordee. I remember spending £400 a month on phone bills when I was on 56k.

Which is why I don't mind spending on a decent connection.

Can't agree more, the 16mb service is just as good and I've never had any problems with them personally.. although a friend of mine has had them really screw him over by taking random sums of money out of his bank and other such odd things.. still..

Damn the fastest they offer in my area is 768kbps. My max download speed is 110kb/s.

A DVD size Download in a hour? How about a day and a half for me. And don't even mention these new games coming out, they are huge.

I would have upgraded to 10MB if the upload speed was better, I mean what is it? 384kbps? What a joke. 4000/384 will do for me just now.

Hopefully these new upgrades will mean much better upload speeds. The 20MB trials are reporting upload speeds of about 768kbps.. Still sucks, But at least its better.

You're lucky someone is, otherwise your precious newsgroups would be worthless.
