Put it back into the drive and make sure autoplay is switched off. Try formatting again. If that fails try formatting in someone else's drive. I've never ever heard of a dvd rw being killed by writing onto it.

had same problems with TDK dvdrw 2x + nero too,try erasing dvd-rw with alcohol 120%,if it won't respond right away and won't show any errors just leave it like that for 30 min or so

install "inCD" (its neros dvd-ram/dvd-rw/Udf drivers ), without them nero has problems with formating some discs or even reading them
they are on the nero cd or get them from netz ,

sedolf, i think you've got a compatibility issue with the optical drive (what brand/model).Trust
me there is nothing wrong with the verbatim. Do some investigation regarding your optical
drive and most likely you'll find the problem. Consider re-flashing current firmware onto the
burner. A little while back, I was trying to burn double-layer media with my old nec burner
and would produce a lot of coasters (expensive nonetheless) I went out and bought a new
Plextor and had never again had a problem.
