The reaction seems to be a combination of CO2 gas and aspartame. Since regular coke doesn't have aspartame (IIRC) the reaction is reduced.

I might misunderstand you, but if we are talking resources as in the needed raw materials to create the soda. I don't think the producers waste more resources then before, as I'm quite certain that they produce more then they sell.
On the other hand if the resource is the soda itself, we drink it because we think it tastes good.
In other words one might say we drink it for the enjoyment of the taste whilst these "experiments" use the soda for the sake of entertainment.
So I'd say that both drinking and blowing the soda up is a waste of resources.
It's a wiser investment to drink the soda as it lasts longer, but that's about it.
hmm, might as well add a disclaimer as I'm not to sure what I've typed so far.
disclaimer: I don't have any idea what I'm talking about, but at the time of writing it made sense.
