Ive never had a problem with Verbatim media... but more importantly, you might want to pickup a Pioneer DVD burner. I tried several different types of media only to come to the conclusion that the more important component was the drive, and not the DVDs themselves.
I hope this helps somewhat. There are certainly far more knowledgable people here that can escort you.

i brought a 2nd 360 this weekend and mine was a core and i got it home to find it was a September Manufator date with a hitachi drive so was starting to panic as these may have the new hitachi firmware that has that new MS resin on the chip and new coding to stop memdump from working . Opened it up to find a 59 drive, was well lucky, 10 mins later flashed and playing and 2nd 360 relegated to kids bedroom

the 2 best burners are the NEC 3550A and the pioneer 111d, the 111d is good for ripping games with too you dont have to open the drive to rip via the hotswap meathod you just stick a paperclip in the hole and the tray pops out nice and safley.
here's my media experience.
FUJIFILM = works flawlessly
RIDATA(riteks) = work flawlessly
VERBATIMS = work flawlessly
MEMOREX = burns and games boot but get DDE's (on both sammy and hitatchi)
SONY = avoid like the plague they have very mixed results
hope this helps ya

I also got an xbox360 a short while ago. It was a pretty hard decision as the firmware hack might be disabled soon by some games that require you to update or whatever, you never know.
but then, I figured, maybe they won't do anything about it like that and only use firmware-hack-proof dvd drives in the future.
So yeah, I figured it'd be better to get an xbox360 now. I can still get a real modchip in a year when they're out.
I was afraid to buy one because of the new drives, so I bought a pre-flashed one. that way I could at least be sure to get a proper drive, and it cost exactly the same $$$ as a new 360, so that's alright.
anyway, I'm using Pioneer 111D with Memorex (mediacode RITEK R01) and it works great.

The brand is absolutely meaningless. The media ID code is what differentiates media. Just buy 'Made in Japan' Fuji or Sony 8x and you will almost certainly get Taiyo Yuden.

i work for a pressing plant dude and chances of you getting good sony and mem brands in highstreet stores are slim it just depends. You're better getting solid brands that have their own dye or are "quality" brands that use the same dyes consistantly. Fujis that have the fuji003 code are manufactured by yuden too, just because you dont see a TY001 etc etc there doesnt mean it isnt. Theyre yudens DVD-R media codes. good Fujis for DVD DL are made in taiwan and theyre made by ritek and come from the RITEK-D01-01 batch of dyes
There's currently at least 10 different sony and mem media codes consistantly he wants to know what the best deal is and i say verbs or riteks. But lastly just to make you look a total tit yuden DONT PRODUCE +R DL's and if you say they do u dont have a fucking clue and ur buying knock offs with fake media codes, infact call yudens USA corp office and ask them. So sure buy Sony 8x DL because i garuntee you 150% theyre not yudens.. And Yuden only started manufacturing -R DL's in japan in july this yr. And theyre very hard to get in try ordering some outside of japan...

The big brains at MS already answered the fw hack.. They chose glue.
November they can stick a drumstick up their ass.
