Somebody pointed me some days ago when we saw the new PS3 design that the font used to spell “PLAYSTATION 3″ resembles the Spiderman movie font used on the DVD covers and posters. I thought it was just a coincidence, but after a quick search of the two, my friend (and many others as I saw) was right. Its the same font basicly!
This issue as I saw was pretty old and many people noticed but almost none of them knew the font used or why they are so alike.
So …the font used (I think) was 1979, a decorative-futurist font, of course with some tweaking in it, mostly cutting the “A” and “P” and using an Italic/Oblique version plus a bit of squashing on it in the end of the tweak, for PS3 and again some serious tweaking for Spiderman, but the regular forms of the letters and style are basicly the same.
I found that there’s even a public petition against Sony to change the font. Very funny!
Was this just a big big coincidence or…? The font used in the PS3 logotype is not that great and I can’t believe they didn’t researched it before using it in the branding of PS3. At least they can change it before making final the design of the console. I hope…
