|
|
Ok so I know someone made a similar thread a seccond ago, but I want my own, and I *will* make an FAQ on all this soon.. i promise.. maybe..
ANYWAY!
If I go out tommorrow, pop into the local game store and buy a second hand Core package (I have NO money..) what can I expect?
- Will I be able to flash the firmware no matter what type of drive it is?
- How hard is this process? I noticed a USB bootable firmware flasher.. ?
- Is a hard drive needed? What is it used for?
- If I found £50 on the street and could afford a premium, can you upgrade said hard drive?
- How many games work? What media/applications are needed? patching the games?
- Anything else you want to add..
Me and a friend are a bit low on cash but are desperate for some gaming.. So we may go in halfs on a second hand core system.. Anyone have any good spots for buying 360's in the UK? Is ebay worth watching?

I would really recommend a hard drive, otherwise you can't play all the demos and videos you can get on the standard free live service. Plus, you'll need to buy a memory unit if you don't get a hard drive which will cost a fair amount, and there are plans for games to use it in aiding performance and such.
They are really hard to get hold of outside of a premium package too, at least in the UK anyway.

1. Yes all known drives can be flashed. This is bound to change in the future to prevent hacking.
2. Not hard if your mobo has a compatible SATA chipset. You need to get your 360 open, and either buy a SATA/power adaptor or use your 360 to power the drive while its hooked to your PC via a standard SATA cable.
3. Hard drive is used for storing your profile(gamertag), saves, demos, arcade games, music.
4. No hardware upgrade available yet, but its fully detachable and interoperable to other 360 units. An upgrade drive is pretty much expected in the coming months (60-100GB?). Until a real modchip comes out you cant just "upgrade" with a random laptop drive.
5. All extreme-method ripped games work. So all scene rels since may of this year.
6. Get a premium. The cordless controller is a must, the hdd is a must (play some demos while you burn, or something). I thought the cordless wasnt a good idea at first but I'd never go back now.. best controller EVAH.
Buy won from Asda and if you fuck it up when flashing it you can exchange it without them delving too deep .
"]does anyone have a guide to the process? Can it mess up? If it does, is it reflashable?
theres a nice guide on xbox-scene for both drives. You can mess it up if you copy the wrong key or thing but it is reversible, just flash the original that you backup. Recommend not to use the autoflasher, people have had problems and sometimes it overwrites ur original backup in which case u r screwed.
I'm going to go buy a memory card at some point soon and start downloading the games tonight. Any specific burning methods, the last console I used pirate games on was a PS1.
if u get games that are prepatched u just need to use clonecd and burn it at 2.4x speed.
Oh and if anyone wants to put a list of games/releases I should get.. that would rock..
recommend you get games that are prepatched. Once you get some going you can find other releases that need u to merge the SS.

Samsung is the best drive to have (stealth firmware, usb flashable etc) but cool thing about also having a HDD is that you can also play normal xbox backups, well the ones that are compatable anyway, so thats another good reason to get a hdd, there are a few already flashed sammys on ebay. I bought one for £200 including p+p (core) but I alrady had a premium at home for which i have a hdd but it had an hitachi drive which im now selling!

Ok the xbox arrived this morning. I have a Hitachi drive, I got the OPA-XTREME-HITACHI-7IN1-V2_1 firmware from the usual source, although I am a little concerned about its authenticity mainly because if it is fake, ill have a nice brick on my hands, but ill go for it anyway! Can someone show me a nice guide for the process? I downloaded one but it doesnt seem to have very much information on the hitachi setup..
Whats all this stuff about "grounding" your xbox?
thanks!

you mean to say, Geebee's guide v40 did not help. I thought it was pretty comprehensive. Also search for Textbook's editted version(41), has lot of diagrams and stuff. Hitachi si slightly more involved than the Samsung drives because of the whole setting the modeb thing.

What drive and media are you using to burn the games onto? |
Media as above, the drive is a Sony DVD RW DW-D56A from a Sony Vaio VGN FS 195VP

FFS the next dvd we burned with the bit set correctly still didnt work. I got a real disk off a friend and it seems my seccond hand Xbox has a fucking parental code on it, which obviously I don't know, so I cant do ANYTHING. This is really pissing me off.
Does anyone know how to set the xbox to factory settings?

I think you have to call customer support.

If the parent forgets the new pass code, too, then he or she can call customer support to get the console-specific reset code that clears the Flash settings. |
Dunno.
hehe, found some wierd shit from
mooseman93

To reset the Parental Controls code type in the code X, Y, Left Trigger, X
then you can change the settings and make a new code or disable it. To disable the code, go to the code part and press start. |
Sounds bogus like hell, but try it anyway

ok they reset the settings and the real game is working.. so im guessing its the burn process that is fucked..
When i put the DVD into my windows machine it says it is empty.. when i put it in the XBOX it reads it for a while and then reverts back to "open tray" .. thoughts? Advice? Using latest cloneCD..

What file dates are on the firmware? You might need to use a newer one. With the mediacheck v2 patch.

Im in quite the same situation as you were a week ago sYn. Bought a 50 inch lcd projection tv yesterday and kind of want to get a 360 now
I bought my modded ps, ps2 and xbox from a swedish "professional" mod-webpage called psxcare.com and im considering buying the 360 from that place as well. My choices are the following:
Xbox 360 Core XTREME - 300€
Xbox 360 Core XTREME DUAL FIRMWARE - 400€
Xbox 360 Premium XTREME - 450€
Xbox 360 Premium XTREME DUAL FIRMWARE - 550€
You can add 50€ to be guaranteed a Samsung-drive.
All of them have the xtreme-firmware installed and with the dual ones you can apparently swap between factory and modded firmware.
The big minus as i see is that you get a one year warranty from psxcare.com but the original Microsoft-warranty is void from the get go since it's modded.
So i guess the questions i have are:
-Is the dual firmware-switch necessary?
-Premium or Core?
-Buy the 360 today or wait half a year for better and maybe safer mods?
-Is the Samsung-drive worth 50€?
Im also considering buying a Pioneer 111D dvd-recorder as it is the recommended 360-backup recorder.
Gaming - Intel Quad Q9450 @ 3.2GHZ | Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB | SB X-Fi | PC6400 8GB | 300GB Velociraptor
HTPC - Antec Fusion Remote | AMD Athlon 7850 X2 | PC6400 2GB | 74GB Raptor
Server - Athlon 64 X2 4200+ | Radeon HD 3450 | SB X-Fi | PC5300 2GB | 4TB+ total space
