if there was like a dedicated gaming PC, a PC with no fancy pants operating system...
so it will not have the load of a heavy operating system just like consoles but it will still have hardware upgradebility, and also you will still be able to update it with patches/drivers...
how to update with patches and mods?: connect another PC through a network cable, download the drivers/patches/mods there and load them into your dedicated gaming box

isnt that a good idea?
making it upgradable is making standard parts like ram, video etc..opening case voiding warranty
at the end it will be same pc with issues
so no bad idea
install win 2k... stripped down to the barest of bones needed for a os... with minimal services running, just like the people do who are on top of the futuremark benchmark board all the time.
