I just found out... after years lol... when englishmen ( also americans I dunno )
say hello, how are you doing. that you dont supose to say fine or anything but say the same thing back...  here in holland when we say... how are you doing? we actually mean it... so we expect some awnser back

Well actually you generally do reply but you're usually very brief. I don't know who told you this, I think it's pretty much the same everywhere.
For example:
"Hey, how you doin mate?"
"Fine, you?"
"Oh, i'm alright, just been having alot of work lately" etc.

In Canada (BC) it is like AM said except we don't say 'mate'. Usually you say something positive even if it's not, and then add a quick personal note.

It all depends on who says it to me. If its some random dude on the street, fuck him, he doesnt need to know how im doin and shouldnt be so nosey. You know those ppl? You go run in to the coffee shop and some asshole starts chattin away at you while your standing in line. Fuck I hate that. Best not to even respond to the initial "hey man, whats going on?"...

Sometimes people try to talk to me in line ups too. They are never normal, always off. I think I might take your advice and not respond. I seem to attract all the weirdos. 
If I am having my coffee outside I always have a book. That way if people butt in they are being rude.
You know what my guy friends talk about. The Urinal weirdo's. The guy that is always trying to talk to you at the uninal while you are taking a piss. Thank god we girls don't have that. |
Naw, that depends on where you are. At concerts or raves, where everyone is fucked up and partying, its normal to joke around when your pissing. Someone always cracks a joke, then someone else says something 
Now if Im in some random place and some guy comes and stands beside me (when other spots are available) and starts talking...thats when I have a problem.
Thats when you simply say, "Shut the fuck up". If they respond to that with a comment, we have problems.
Doesnt happen very often tho. I guess gay weirdo's arent attracted to me |

Like what? I too am from the Netherlands - and I appear to be the complete opposite of Crash. Not that that's a bad thing, Crash - just saying stereotypes are silly.
But yes. I have a great dislike that in the Netherlands, conversation always start with "Hey, how are you?". The reponse is always, unless the other person is a whiney emo git, "Good, you?"
What the hell is the point? Either way, I don't care. If they say "good" it leaves no room open for conversation. If they start summarising an autobiography, I get bored. Seriously, if you want something of me, just ask directly, I don't care for your stupid attempt at smalltalk. It annoys both you and me.

man i live in the UK. Most will say *a'ght* or *alright mate* as you meet them but no one ever talks in the street except when i go to my girlfriends place. The folk round there are alot friendlier than my hood.
