Another game worthy of recommendation. DF just came out but i've also been playing this game for some time now that's a little bit more accessible.

Songs of Syx is a retro base/city builder inspired by "Pharaoh", "Dungeon Keeper", and "Rome Total War". It aims at fusing those genres, while also adding to the experience. Its uniqueness comes from having huge populations, while still simulating each individual in great detail and providing big maps with 1:1 scale buildings. It's set in a low-fantasy universe and the gameplay is mostly automated where you let the AI do the mundane tasks, while you focus on greater, more kingly things.

The game can be downloaded and played for free. You'll find the free version on itch.io or on steam (demo). It's not limited in any way other than being 3-6 months behind the payed version in terms of development. If you like it and have the means, consider purchasing it to support development. In any case, don't forget to join the a community to follow development and bombard us with suggestions.

The developer is very active on discord and there is still a lot of good features still in the pipeline. It gets compared to RimWorld but is honestly nothing like it, the simulation scales into a population of 1000+ colonists. It's not designed as a sandbox so building a 1000 cap population is properly challenging, some players have hit 10K population!

yeah its a solid game, i find it hard to fault. it's a very easy game to get started in but theres a lot of nuance to city design which can affect anytihng from racial tensions to rimworld/df style desires for citizens.

i think my favorite thing about it, is that unlike most city builders, it actually gets harder and not easier as you grow your kingdom. not because of micromanagement, but because you have to spend a fair of time making sure things are efficient if you want your population to get beyond a certain size because citizen demands get higher as their race population rises. i also seem to recall it supports a hell of a lot more than 10k pop which is great.

developer is a bit of a miracle worker, he works solo i believe.. but this guy seems to have incredible throughput on features. now the game is practically total war with both proper military, world map and a good simulated city-builder.
