					| |
					| Lately I've been having this problem where in games i get low frame rates around 17fps after playing for 5-10 minutes. After rebooting the games play normal but then suddenly the fps drops to 15-20/ This has happened in several games such as, SC:Chaos Theory, Brothers in Arms, Rogue Trooper and now Prey. I don't know what causes this and it's really annoying.
 System setup
 -----------------
 DELL XPS GEN 2

 2.13 Mhz
 1024 Ram
 GeForce 6800 Ultra

 Any help appreciated

					| you checked your running processes in taskmanager?
i'm guessing you have some adware or some shit like that there
also, have you cleaned the old display drivers out when updating?
overlapping new and old driver files can cause slowdowns and instability

 also try reduce sound acceleration

I don't think it's over heating because when i reboot the system the games play fine. It could be due to spy & adware because I havent scanned my system for ages other than virus scanning. Can you recommend me a good spyware remover guys? I have tried some such as Webroot Spyware Remover; it finds and removes many but after rebooting the system and when i re-scan it re-finds them and this process goes on.

And also because my system is a laptop (XPS GEN 2) I can't install the regular GeForce drivers from Nvidia's site and they don't seem to release updated drivers for their GeForce 6800 GO series.

I'm just going to disable my Anti Virus software and see if that's the cause of the problem.

					| I find it works best to use Spybot Search and Destroy and then use AdAware SE Personal. It should kill most spyware.

					| I've used Spybot Search & Destroy to remove spyware which found 131 problems : ) I played Prey for more than 30 minutes and didn't encounter any fps drops. I guess it was sypware that was causing all this trouble. Thanks everyone.

yep, that'll do it. 131, thats quite a few. if you run adaware also, that will remove some other stuff that spybot didnt catch (and vice versa, spybot catches some things adaware doesnt)

also if youre really stumped, download, run, and save a log file with "HijackThis" (google for it, its a tiny app), post the log here and i/we can help you clean out some more stuff

I've also scanned with AdAware which also found 95 entries. Most of them were IE cookies. I will test other games just to make sure.

					| About that Hijackthis log, I would fix this
O16 - DPF: {C4925E65-7A1E-11D2-8BB4-00A0C9CC72C3} (Virtools WebPlayer Class)
 The rest looks clean...
BTW the perfect combination is Spy Sweeper + Sunbelt Counterspy, should find almost everything...
