I've learned recently that laptop video cards have a "dedicated" part , and a "hyper memory" part , and in my case , I'm going to buy a new laptop with an ATi Mobility radeon X1600 with 512 MB video memory (128MB dedicated , and the rest is is Hyper!)... anyway , my questions are :

1 - If this video card sucked the remaining 384 MBs of memory from the laptop's 2048 MB DDR2 RAM , will it function exactly like a 512 MB fully dedicated desktop card ?

2 - Is the more dedicated memory the better ? or it doesn't really matter if a I have a lot of RAM (memory) onboard ?

3 - How can I know how dedicated the video card is from inside windows ? just like normal desktops (display properties) ? - I mean if I wasn't sure , or if I haven't read about the video card's model online...

4 - Will this video card (Ati X1600 Mbility Radeon) run Splinter Cell - Double Agent ? or not ?

Thanks Guys.

1 - A Mobility will never be as good as a non mobility card. So it wont function exactly like a 512Mb dedicated desktop card.
2 - Yes its better, its on board (on the gfx card itself) and is generally faster.
3 - Not sure exactly what you mean but you would know how much RAM it was stealing because that ram would not show up within windows.
4 - I doubt it.

BUY A DESKTOP IF YOU WANT TO PLAY GAMES! I don't understand why people are so obsessed with buying laptops to use as desktops when desktops are cheaper and more powerful.. madness.. Laptops are for portability, not power.

People don't wish to compromise, they want to get the best bang for buck. Portability sure, but there are many other factors and using a laptop as your desktop has it's benefits. Fundamentally I agree with what your saying (besides the fact I would never spend so much money on something I couldn't upgrade easily and freely) - but I don't think it's unreasonable for people to want their laptop to compete with their desktop on the graphics department.
