SpykeZ, savegames aren't stored in the game's folders for most games and haven't been for years now, I can't believe someone with as much experience as you would fall for such a rookie mistake.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but developers moving over to Windows 7 aren't really allowed to edit their folder post-installation without elevated privileges, so any settings/saves and whatnot has to be saved either in the Registry, the AppData folder or the Documents folder.
Important tips:
If on XP, always back up Application Data, Local Settings and My Documents before a format.
If on 7, always back up the AppData and Documents folders.

I did the same things with dragon age and haven't touched the game since. can't bring myself to replay 70% of it.
but honestly, we should both be used to this by now. It's pretty common these days for saves to be somewhere strange.

I actually have my documents folder located on an entirely different hard drive from my OS install. I kinda assumed that this is a norm, considering that it saves you a a lot of settings and saves if for some reason you need to refresh your system.
In fact, I have all the music/video/documents files on a separate drive... In any case, I'd imagine it is a user's responsibility to look after and back up their VIP files in case of a fresh install...
All in all, it is in fact a windows Vista/7 default behaviour to keep the game saves and settings in a user specific documents folder (a very convenient feature might I add) instead of a game folder (something that is also considered an improvement from the old days of keeping saves in the game directory). So your raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaage is unfounded, kind Sir!

Oh and by the way, just backing up YOUR AppData and Documents folders won't do it. You have to backup the shared All Users' AppData and Documents folders as well, as some games tend to (for some weird reason) have common savegames among different user profiles.

I actually have to agree with the raging squirrel on this one. It's not so much the fact that they have to be stored in the game folder, but right now savegames are all over the place!
It would be nice for instance if every game on PC automatically searches for the Games map in My Documents (or create the map if it's not there yet) and stores it's saves in there. Would be more convenient and this way EVERY savegame will be stored within 1 map, not trillions of maps scattered around in countless other maps deep into the Windows directories.

Fact is, most saves are stored in the documents folder nowadays... and before any kind of reformatting you should make sure to back the saves up wherever they are, if they are important to you ..simple as that.

Some kind of Swiss Army Knife boot CD with repair tools such as Anti-Malware, Rootkit removal and Antivirus should always be handy. Check out Ultimate Boot CD for Windows or BartPE with programs of your choice.

I hate when they hide the saves in Users\Username\AppData\Local\
Mafia2 for example has the saves there i noticed. I lost a save from GTA IV that way, so i never finished it (i was like 80% in, far too long in to replay all of it..). Downloading saves for that game seems impossible too, never got it to work at least...
Why can't developers come to an agreement that they always should be saved in \Users\Username\Documents\My Games

I wondered the same thing some time ago. But the reason that the saves are stored in another folder is this:
When you have multiple accounts on your PC, some of them won't have administrator rights. That means, they don't have write access to all the folders. So they have to choose a folder where they always have writing access, and that is the documents folder.

Even that was back in XP. Now with Vista/7, even administrators can't normally run programs and let them write in their folders, the programs have to ask for elevated privileges via UAC.

Application settings in this case saves should never be saved in their folder but instead be stored in the appropriate place in my docs. In this case pretty much EVERYONE fails because not only do I have a My Games folder that most devs ignore in 7 we have a folder dedicated to savegames that devs ignore.
