do I need to get the platinum bundle to do the firmware flash or will it work with the core system alone?

the only difference between the premium and the core is the accesories ( hard drive , head set , remote etc ) the console is the same in both packs , only difference you will have is the dvd drive , ( hitachi or samsung ) any pack could have either drive but the samsung is the better drive.

Also the Core is know as the "tard pack" because you get shafted if you go for the Core instead of the Premium, since the contents of the Premium bought separately are far more expensive than the 100$ difference, and you dont get a wireless pad and you still have to get a memcard to create a gamertag or save games.
