Ys SEVEN was the first fully 3D entry in this storied franchise, the first Ys title to allow players to control multiple characters at once, and also the first title in the series to reach a wide mainstream audience in the West. Though built for the PSP system, it’s finally coming home to PC where it has been upscaled and presented in HD, complete with all the features of a modern PC release. The combat system consists of a three-member battle party with enemies engaged on the field map in real-time for fast-paced combat. Old fans of the series and new players alike will be immersed in its rich, vibrant world containing over 30 hours of gameplay.
The kingdom of Altago is rebuilding around a newfound peace after years of war against the merciless armies of Romn. Battle-hardened adventurer, Adol, and his trusty wall-crushing companion, Dogi, arrive in the harbor of Altago City and quickly find themselves in a scuffle with the kingdom’s military police body, the Dragon Knights. The result is jail time on a false espionage charge, which captures the attention of Altago’s regent. One thing leads to another, and a chain of events is set in motion that ultimately guides the pair on a quest across the land to learn more about its estranged local gods; the Five Great Dragons.
Join Adol, Dogi and their many new companions as they explore this hostile new country and undertake a journey to save it from monsters, bandits, political saboteurs and long-forgotten ancient forces. Use your 3-member battle party to fight and demolish foes on the field map in real-time, all set against the beautiful 3D backdrops of Altago.

Wonder how many walls will be punched in this game?
(Or at least I think the blue haired guy up there is said wall puncher, hell even in the first Ys games he punched the 4th one occasionally. )
A lot of people seem to think so, but no, he's not. I don't know that we're supposed to say who is, so I'll refrain for the moment, but I'll say this much: they're VERY good. And dedicated to their work. They refused to accept payment for their work on Ys Seven, in fact, until they'd confirmed with us that they did a good job on the port. And they did -- they went above and beyond the call of duty, I feel.
As this is a PSP port, however (rather than a PS3 port like Cold Steel), it should be noted that it doesn't have nearly as many bells and whistles as Cold Steel, so hopefully you guys aren't too spoiled for choice at this point. There's really only so much you can do to upscale a game designed for PSP resolution and processing power, after all!
When you see it in action, however, I think you'll be convinced -- it runs as smooth as silk, and everything looks really sharp.
HD Chinese texture pack mod
This uses the Chinese Joyland port textures which were upscaled and re-worked and look a bit better than the Xseed PC port.
Yeah I just saw that, blew through the final part of the game yesterday though and there's not much else after that so it's been uninstalled.
(No unlockable stuff so outside of replaying on a higher difficulty level there's not much to do.)
I enjoyed the game though so next up, Ys VIII and NIS doing things differently.
(Haven't heard anything truly bad yet about it aside from people arguing about them doing different terms compared to XSeed for some of the localization changes but I wonder how the PC port will be in terms of other features too.)
As for Ys VII, it's easier than the older games but they inject a lot of hitpoints in even the earlier bosses so while you can dodge and flash block plus have a ton of different equipment on hand and numerous skills expect battles against these bosses to DRAG OUT.
Last boss fight in particular can be really lengthy, ha ha.
As usual nice dungeon design, good amount of enemies (Almost 100, plus bosses.) and while the story is straightforward and linear there's a few neat little twists and turns plus some 20 hidden side quests although most have a "Best before." period generally before a certain major plot event though a few use a different condition.
Characters are about as quirky as ever and there's even some mild swearing, Falcom is doing the same thing for this game as for the Trails games so yeah most conversations will change after each major plot point but I think I managed to get most of them though that and grinding for materials for the higher-end crafting of armor and weapons and other supplies (And money!) dragged out the playtime to somewhere over 20 hours in total though you can finish it much quicker than that.
(Finding out that by holding a button down you engage the skip feature at the very end of the game was a thing, default keyboard binds are a bit rough too just to get that out.)
Adol even gets a few companions for this game (Six or so but only three are active in battle.) and the game has a thing with blunt, blade and pierce attacks although it mostly meant Adol and Dogi wrecked shit and the third slot was swapped as demanded depending on enemy type, companion abilities or just to grind a bit ha ha.
Speaking of abilities most also have a thing to where level 5 sees them enhanced in a noticeable way either becoming much faster or doing things like expanding the AoE or number of attacks and then a further change at level 8 of 10 in total, just using the ability improves it so you don't have to hit anything but aside from learning the ability (level 1, meaning you can scrap the weapon for something stronger and still retain it.) can take a while let alone getting these fully leveled.
(SP gain for using these can be slow too until you get some accessories or other means to rapidly build up this resource.)
Anyways, good to see those "ships" finally looking like ships thanks to the existence of these higher-res textures.
(Should cover every environmental texture in the entire game, unsure about stuff like characters or creatures though, probably not too big of a difference for that but the environment textures were the worst looking ones.)
EDIT: Spoiler.
Spoiler:
And as usual - and with the twist the Ys games does. - the girl still doesn't get Adol in the end as he sails away to the next adventure, funny to see a reverse of that old thing.
(And that's 7 some old deities and apocalyptic events thwarted and Adol slaying shit on one more island, ha ha.)
