I winrar all the files and then clicked on the start.bat....the opening valve screen came up and screen went black...then it went back to desktop.

Nothing else happened.

Any ideas? What did I do wrong?

try edit the start.bat with notepad, right click on it and select edit... then add "-windowed" behind alle the other crap. Then save and run it again.

like this btw

hl2.exe -steam -game episodic -windowed

thanks...that got it to work...now how can I play in a full screen...not window.

When I went to options...and selected full screen...it crashed.

You cant... Its a problem on Valve´s side(you might find more help here )

If it happens, it happens on every source game you got. I just play in windowed mode and set the res to my desktop res(1600x1200) works fine.

if u r using a DX8 or lower vedio card, u need to download and install the UPDATE 1 .
