try msn plus ( www.msgplus.net). You can activate the boss control (press crtl+space) to hide msn into the tray, and you can configure it so that it asks for a password when you want to unhide it (it is still running and you are still online while msn is hidden).
It's true that it comes with banners, and spyware and shit but if you manage to read, during the setup you can select "i don't want to give my support, don't install the sponsors". I think you'll find hapiness there
