WASHINGTON -- Imagine an invisibility cloak that works just like the one Harry Potter inherited from his father. Researchers in England and the United States think they know how to do that. They are laying out the blueprint and calling for help in developing the exotic materials needed to build a cloak.

But that takes an outside projector, a real cloak would have to bend light around the user.

you're wrong

In reality, the 'optical camouflage' cloak is anything but invisible. It is made up of 'retro-reflective material' coated with tiny light-reflective beads that cover its entire length. The cloak is also fitted with cameras that project what is at the back of the wearer on to the front, and vice versa. The effect, as the Japanese team demonstrated last week, is to make the wearer blend with his background.

for an invisibility cloak to work, it would have to have six stereoscopic cameras built into it, be covered with 11.6 million 'hyperpixels', each consisting of a very bright electronic display, and be controlled by a super-fast computer that would run on a power source that could be built into the cloak.

in other words, those beads are acting as the pixels of a television screen and what you're seeing in front of you is what's actually bein' filmed on the backside and it's like that for all sides (front, back, up, down, left, right).that's why the 6 camera's are needed and why the object seems to vanish.they demonstrated this with a ball a brick and a cloak.

so there's no projector involved at all...

After they are done with that cloak, they should start working on the hyperdrive again.
I think it's about damn time for us to visit other galaxies in a reasonable amount of time.

Why would they need to project anything onto the bottom of the 'cloak'? If it's a cloak it's not going to envelop the entire object, but be draped over it, so the bottom isn't going to be covered. This would also mean if they wanted to be invisible from above, the camera that pointed downwards would need to be integrated in a different way.

Also, if there is only one camera for each side, and the 'cloak' actually behaves like a fabric, how do they calculate where the projection of each side should end? As the fabric is not uniform each projection area could bend and fold, which would distort the effect.

I did see it for a car once, where they arranged a series of cameras on one side, and a compiled display on the other. Then they drove it through a forest. It worked, if only to the extent that it proved the theory is sound.

I can only assume they meant some kind of full body suit rather than an actual cloak.
a cloak wouldn't be very practical anyway, either you'd see someone's feet or it would need to reach to ground and you'd trip if you stepped on it.

As for the effect being distorted, that's for the most part compensated by the super-fast cpu involved,I don't know exactly how what needs to be shown is calculated.maybe the dimensions need to be measured first.
