Didn't quite believe the news yesterday, so thought I'd check with Gametap. Surely they couldn't be offering all of Codemasters new/upcoming titles, games like Turning Point: Fall of Liberty, Clive Barker's Jericho, DiRT and Overlord, for free? Seems they are, with Gametap confirming today that yes, as long as you're willing to put up with the odd commercial here and there, you can play them all for free on their ad-supported section.

We all like to bitch and moan about the negative effects of advertising on gaming. I know I do. Let's pause then for a second and give thanks for a rare instance where it's actually going to help you out.

P.S: does my quoting look ok? Confused

It's a good thing Codemasters makes really good games that people want to play and are always top sellers!!

/sarcasm

Well at least this will put to the test what they say "I'd wouldn't play it even if they gave it away for free!" Wink

Interesting this could be a start of a new trend in the gaming indrustry but do we have a pricise idea of how the "odd commercial here and there" will actually be like in the game? Like will it be subtile so not to damage the games theme or are we talking about more full blown like on tv with commercials interrupting our movies and such.

actually i posted something along those lines in this thread, but either the post didnt go through or it got deleted...

basically i dont believe in 'free'... theres always a price, i just dont trust it... no way are they going to basically GIVE AWAY a new release game for FREE, unless theres all sorts of conditions and terms n shit, and probably full screen adverts every 20 minutes that DONT go away until you click the 'buy' button, for whatever can of soda, or bottle of shampoo thats being advertised... shit... id rather BUY the game than put up with 'free' games sponsored by advertising...

They have been advertising in games for a long time now, you guys might have just not noticed it due to they weren't really that heavy. GRAW..first mission walking down that first street..the huge AXE bulletin. RS6 Vegas..middle of a firefight, your in the middle of a firefight when you take cover behind an ad post that a lot of places actually have like in the malls..when you actually realize....your being covered by a core 2 duo ad.

So personally, I think they'll just rape the loading screens with ads which I personally could care less about, who the fuck judges a game by it's load screens? or they'll just be a lot heavier on the billboard ad's in game, which in worst case scenerio it'd just be an immersion breaker.

i dont believe that adds will be limited to in-game billboards and loading screens... seriously, could you imagine getting NEW current games for FREE, and all you had to put up with was a loading screen that noone ever looks at anyway, and a few easily ignored in-game billboards? hell no... no way would i believe that, but if this WAS the case, that'd be great!

the odd commercial here and there...
anyone who believes THAT, needs their head examined...

But you know, they might be on to something. If ads. help reduce prices, everyone should embrace it. It will lower warez for sure.

+1

I can't speak for everyone, but video games and movies are just about all people really have now days to escape reality and indulge in something that will take their mind off their stress at work and so forth. the last thing real gamers are going to want are some serious REALITY checks in a video game. I personally think it's a low blow to us.

Granted if people want to be raped with ads in their game, it's their decision, as long as the paid copy of a game includes none of that bullshit.

nah, id rather pay full price than have a gaming experience ruined by spam. theres no way you could possibly expect developers and advertising companies to behave reasonably when you give them an opening like this, theres no way they'd have that kind of restraint, they'd always keep pushing and pushing as far as they can... you get enough advertising bs spam in your email and in your mailbox... you want to give them a chance to put it in your games too?

Nvidia has a commercial in almost every single game! After the intro, devs logos etc. there is almost in every game now. So ads are nothing new.

I guess at first it will be like in R6 Vegas or the mentioned GRAW 1 - won't piss you off, stop the game etc. but if this idea evolves it will be just like chiv wrote above Sad

Those are not ads, they are brandings/trademarks.

yeah and they arent in the least bit intrusive

imagine going to a 2 hour movie at the theatre, except theres tv adverts every 10 minutes for about 3 minutes each, and thats pretty much the kinda effect i see in the future of advertising sponsored games..

Well Overlord and Colin McRae Dirt were very good games they recently released, and I'm really looking forward to Turning Point and Clive Barker's Jericho.

I think it's a great idea, depending just how intrusivethe ads are.
They will have to be at least a little intrusive but, otherwise no-one will fork out for the paid version.
But if you can't afford to pay games, well, the developer still does have costs and if you can still play for free whilst letting them recoup some money then I think it's all to the good.
Free games are fantastic, but guilt free free games are even better. Even if it does have the potential to be a little intrusive.

I could think of different spots to place ads without it being too much intrusive:
- (ingame) menu's
- loading screens
- save spots (takes a little time on certain games)
- ingame, where normally ads would be.

But I guess they will also place a fullscreen videoad at the start of the game, which is also not too bad. I'm sure they aren't gonna pause the game for ads.

I see publishers releasing cheaper games with ads and collectors editions without ads, for instance. Also, ads are the only way to get any money from warez, since it's easy to track the amount of multiplayers and advertisers just pay per player.

If kept within limits, this is not a bad development.

Man they are giving away games for "free" - that's about $50 loss for them per unit, even more outside the states. You bet your ass they are gonna overload the games with ads.
