I was wondering if you can switch back and forth from sata and ata hard drives on newer boards or if you can have one sata hard drive and one ata hard drive pluged into the same board.

Yea, I have that setup on my server (1 ata and 2 * S-ata)

No performance losses...
Using 2xIDE and 3xSATA here and works great.
