Im looking for a cheap laptop avalible in the UK, I have a max of £400 (GBP) .. I've found a few linked here..

http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&l=en&oc=N04135&rbc=N04135&s=dhs&sbc=ukdhsrsinspn_1300_3

http://www.ebuyer.co.uk/UK/product/96518

to name them.. but I dont know the real performance difference between the celeron-m 360 (1.4) and a Sempron 3000.. plus Im sure there are websites I have no thought off..

I could do with some thoughts before 11pm tonight as some deals on the dell laptop are today only!

HEEEELPPPP!

dunno what you are using it for?

But 256mb ram is to small to run windows on. So upgrade that.

dunno, but when i see the word celeron and sempron i would choose sempron, because celeron sounds like slow processor in my ears haha

haha, they're both budget CPU's, just not sure how to compare them, as there are no real benchmarks! As for the 256, thats what almost every laptop comes with (there are no laptops avalible in my price range with more..) I was planning on running linux on it though Wink!

The laptop will only be used for web/essays/notes/mild GFX creation and web development.. there is no need for anything powerful, just good for the pirce and long battery life..

The acer looks to have a VERY poor battery life, less than 1 hour. The dell looks to have better battery life of almost 4 hours..

Well, Do you want alot of battery life or are you not bothered? , If you are wanting a good batterylife then get the Dell, Since it uses the "M" edition processor.

256MB RAM is alright, But it would be recommended to get 512MB due to having to share the GFX card? I'm not sure about that actually, What GFX is the dell using?

From personal experence i have found acer laptop's to be quite good, A few cons as you've said are less battery life. I have had no problems with my Acer Travelmate 2702, Apart from one power supply problem that acer delt with no problem.

Also you will need to install a Wireless LAN card for the laptop since it appears not to have one, Thats if you wanting to use wireless.

Yeah, the reviewed laptop is the more expensive version of the laptop I want, like I said Im on a TINY budget lol.. the only thing that matters is battery life and usability.. not fussed about performance as such. I was considering a VIA C3 CPU Wink

Lol syn, a VIA C3? Seriously, i think you answered the question yourself. If you want battery life get the Dell, although i havent found any answers about the capacity of the batteries. And wich core is that Celeron M made of?

Edit:

How about one of these?

I went for the dell, upgraded the screen to 15.1 inches and bought an extra 256mb of used ram off e-bay.. the total cost came too..

£383.39 INC VAT/Shipping Very Happy! Good deal I think..

Inspiron 1300 Celeron M Processor 370 (1.50 GHz, 1MB L2 Cache, 400 MHz FSB)
15.4 inch WXGA (1280x800) LCD Panel
256MB 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM (1x256)
60GB (5.400rpm) Hard Drive
Fixed Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Drive with Software
60W AC Adapter
4 Cell 29Whr Primary Battery
UK - Modem Cable and Adapter
Dell Wireless 1370 802.11b/g Mini PCI Card

plus the extra ram of course.. AS FOR THE VIA C3!!!! It was designed for embeded linux systems Wink, thus its "suckiness" but in reality its a pretty nifty chip for the price.. I belive Linus himself worked on the chip to some extent to provide utter linux compatability!

the via c3 is really nice IMO. Even though it ain't any perfomer its a cheap way to get a fully featured PC perfect for a little media box. And building it into a NES chassi is sweet... Very Happy

The laptop arrived and Im a happy man, its well built, worked right out off the box off battery and all I needed to do is uninstalled about 1gb of shit Razz! Im going to go install linux and then I may do a clean windows install, get pro on here rather than home/dell edition. I also removed the horrid 3gb for "restoration" as it seemed a little pointless.. Im sure this is something I will regret when I find I have no drivers Razz

Ah well.. Once the extra ram arrives this thing should be great Very Happy!

*is running linux in all its glory on the laptop which he is using to post*

Working wonderfully.. granted it took a day to get the WiFi and VGA working correctly, but it was worth every seccond spend. The thing is running perfectly, just what I wanted.. Im dual booting but I dont see any reason why I would need windows on this thing as all I use windows for is games Very Happy! Once I get the extra ram in this bad boy it will be smoking..

*happy [sYn] Very Happy*
