|
 |
Ok so here we go again, I slept in with my Sennheiser 135 USB, got tangled up in some Vodka crazed dream and I guess i streched the cevlar coated cord to the max and now only left side works...surpirse surprise (prob the 5th headset I do this with). Now what would you guys recomend as the hottest best gaming headphones out there, price is no matter...well lets say 50-120 bucks or so. And yea, I will not sleep with the new ones, thats proven to be a real bummer.

The concept of "Gamer" headphones is pretty much the same as the concept of "gamer" laptops - take a regular lappie, paint it in black and red, and sell it for 2x what it's worth. Having a mic attached to your headphones is nice, but if there's a brain between the ears, it's not too hard to DIY.
Now, good headphones. I'm going just about to the top of your original $50-120 range here, as everything below that price point sounds like crap to me since I've had my headphones. Recommended companies to look into:
Sennheiser: Pretty package, famous name, expensive
Grado: No pretty package, no famous name, amazing sound quality for the price.
And thus, I bring you my winner:
The Grado SR-80
Price: $95 + S/H
Package: ugly
Would I trade these for a pair of equally-priced Sennheisers: fuck no.
But hey, don't take my word for it, read the reviews. I did.

Naaa, not an option for me. Hate to lean over and what have you. Used headphones with mic's as long as I can remember. I think I will go for that Steel headset, like the little soundcard USB thingy + that you get software with it to set up the suround settings. Its also within the price range, between 70-110 bucks.

Well, it's a balance of quality vs. features.
You can get a headset with a mic for the same price of a good pair of Grados, but the sound quality won't even be in the same realm as Grados. If you're interested, find a store that sells SR-80s in your area, go down there and listen to them for a few minutes. Then listen to a stock pair of no-name "big-bass" $30-50 headphones at your local pharmacy/convenience electronics store (this is my guess of what the phones you're looking into are based on) and compare the 2 for yourself. I've yet to hear a better pair than the Grados.
Grados are pretty much dedicated to one thing, and they do it exceptionally well: they deliver a clean, delicate, and accurate stereo experience. They're not designed to imitate surround sound or a live experience. They're designed for Mozart rather than gunshots. But if properly configured, they do gunshots pretty fucking well.
My existing config is a pair of Grados + a stereo pair of Sony speakers in my room. Once you get the proper volume levels and proper surround settings, it's about the same experience as sitting inside of a good movie theater. When listening to music at about 25% volume, I can hear the artist inhaling/exhaling, even when it isn't part of what you're "meant" to hear.
The microphone, when I need it, is just an old headset on my neck with the mic facing upwards so as to be in the same position as a normal headset.
Of course, the final choice is up to you. If you'd prefer to sacrifice quality for convenience, that's reasonable. I'm pretty obsessed with audio quality, though, and decided quality was more important. YMMV.
