This is my bitch
I hate fucking aeroplan (Aerogold Visa). They are a huge rip off!
I am so upset tonight, I feel like I have cancer of the puppy.
I have this friend that went out of town and left her 52 inch TV with me. It’s a projection HD type, its not the best on the market by today's standard but I loved it, Nice stereo, good picture (not a good picture if you are looking on a angle) But great for me. Anyway that was 2 years ago and I just got an e-mail from her and her brother just moved out of the house and wants it,........ so I am going to lose it. I don’t want to go back to my old 31 inch (I think it was 31).
So I looked into using my aeroplan miles to buy one because I have been accumulating them forever. When ever parents went away on a cruise or make a big purchase I always had them stick it on my card.
Get this
I want:
- Sony Bravia 40 inch widescreen LCD HDTV (FUTURESHOP = $ 2,979.00
- You need 445,000 aeroplan miles
- I have 242,621 aeroplan miles so I need another 202,379 aeroplan miles.
You have the option to buy more aeromiles if you are short, which sounds great because the TV is only $2,979. right? How much more could it be for me to buy the extra, Right? I figured maybe I would have to fork out $1,000. plus tax. Something like that. BUT NOOOOOOOO.
It costs $ 600 for 15,000 aeroplan so by my math I would need to pay another $ 8,100.
What's up with that? Pay another $ 8,100. for a set I could buy for $2,979.????
To get all 445,000 aeroplan miles would be like buying a pretty decent condo--all on your Visa. Who even spends that kind of money on a credit card in a life time.
Even going on a trip is a rip off. All they pay for is the airfare and these days its much cheaper to go all inclusive. I just looked into this and I think its a couple hundred cheeper but then if you have to include food, activities and ... you are right back where you started. Plus you can only go during no peek times.
The consumer always gets shafted.

it's not surpirsing at all...it works this way with all those "save free points to get nice stuff for free" bullshit saving programs.
All they do is attract new customers...

They even try to get you to BUY these stupid miles for other people as gifts. You have to be soft in the brain to fall for that. Is the average consumer THAT stupid. So you buy $200 worth and get 5,000 air miles. Its like giving negitive money. I would rather have the $200. At least then my stupid TV would cost $ 2,779 instead of $2,979.
@ApeX " save free points to get nice stuff for free" bullshit saving programs" is excatly what it is. Even Save on more card is like that. Shop here to get points but you are paying a 50% markup for all the veg. and fruit. Although , I did get a tile saw but that was after 10 yrs of shopping there. Maybe worth $100.

Thats how they make money. Without those miles alot of what is profitable in the airline business wouldnt be there anymore. Unless they arnt for planes?

I have a bit of an obsessive personality and have not been able to let this go. So I went digging and found a plausible, possible plan.
- For 13,000 aeroplan miles you can buy $100 gift certificate. With my 242,621 miles I would be able to buy 18 of them. (if I am even allowed to do that) so then I would have a $1,800 credit toward the $ 2,979. making the TV $ 1,179.
(GST & PST = .14 of $ 2,979. = $ 417. Tax)
- So my Total TV would be $ 1,596.
(gift certificates make a little more sense)
Another good thing about gift certificates is that I don't have to stick to the TV's future shop has chosen for the aeroplan program, so their might be a cheeper one, or it might go on sale. Every year the prices drop so hopefully I will be able to get it for less.
This is a picture of the old TV so you know what kind it is.

- 1 airmile for $40 is brutal. I think I have 6 air miles. On my aerogold visa I get 1 mile for every dollar I spend. This statement I added 2312 miles. $ 800 of it was for painful truck repair (very expensive trip down a VERY inactive logging road)

Yea, Areoplan sucks if you try and buy stuff from there "Rewards" catalog. But for airfare i love it. I have enough Areoplan miles to fly anywhere in the world, just from business trips. Mind you i could fly anywhere in cattle car AKA hospitality service.
If i were you i would just keep the miles for traveling, and save up for the TV.
@Nouse
Thats why i use my CCard for everything. And pay it off every month. And isnt it every $20 = 1 airmile. I have about 5 or 6 thousand airmiles from just gas fill ups and groceries. And then you have all those double airmiles deals and such.
