The topic says everything.
I'm going to buy an external harddrive for important backups, like photos and documents for my company.

Is it safe to let external harddrives spin 24/7, so that the backup may take place 03:00AM every night?
Which one to buy; Western Digital or Maxtor OneTouch / Personal Storage Series?

It shouldn't be a problem. I've never had a problem with Maxtor.

I don`t see the problem here.
It`s basically an ide drive in a special storage.

You could also buy one of these usb/firewire boxes and choose any hd you trust.

The external drives from WD go into standby (the drives power down) after a few minutes of inactivity anyway.

dunno but here external 160gb same price as usb enclosure+200gb,30/40 gigs is big diffrence & it takes 5 minutes to merge this things not to mension that u usually get 2mb cash where is if u build yourself u can get 8/16mb cash for that price
btw if u get external hd make sure u format it as NTFS coz FAT can loose data if not properly unpluged or switched off

I got myself a Ximeta Netdisk (cheap brand i think) 3-4years ago work in usb or ethernet, I store important job documents on it and all my mp3. The drive is spinning everyday since I got it, and it still in good condition.

The only problem I've got is the power off button on the back of the HD, the drive is always at ON, but sometimes it act like it was at OFF so I just need to touch the botton and the drive start spinning again.

So if you get a good 1 i doubt you will have any problem with it. I paid around 200$, that was 3-4 years ago.

mmm weed...
