Someone just came into the computer store I work at and asked where they could sell a 1gb Sony Pro Duo memory stick complete with 5 year warranty! I said how much you want for it? He said £20. You can bet your ass I snatched his hand off! These things are £99.99 in my local Gamestation and its loads better than my current 512mb since I can finally play a lot more releases! What a great day Im having today!

Very true. And they're almost identical to the real ones in looks, but not in performance.
Don't buy then off e-bay or from Hong Kong. Buy from a reputable store.

Fakes?! God I hope I dont have a fake! I have my PSP with me at work and I tried the 1gb in it and it came up with 946mb free space so I assume it works and its genuine?! Do fakes come with a 5 year warranty!?

They're not exactly fakes, I mean they are memory sticks, more like forgeries.
The majority of them die quite quickly, and they have slow read/write speeds. Some of them end up melting and smoking inside your memory card reader or your PSP!!!
Or you might not ever notice you have a fake, you could be lucky and get one without problems.

The fakes are also noted as being thicker than a genuine scandisk. Just dont buy from ebay and you should be fine.

OMG like woah! That dude who sold me the 1GB Sony Duo Pro memory stick came in to my shop again today trying to sell me a 512mb! He wanted £20 for it which I thought was a lot since its half as big as the one I bought yesterday. Upon closer inspection it was also a mini SD card which is no good to me so I said no but Ill have a 2gb one if you can get one for the PSP. I asked where he is getting them from and his reply was "does it matter?". Then he said he will be in this afternoon with a 2GB memory stick for the PSP but it will cost me £30! Im gonna try it if he brings it in my PSP before he leaves to be sure it works but ... Oh My God! Very Happy

Edit: Bugger! I just thought! I could use that mini SD card for my phone! :/

It matters if it melts inside your PSP. If that happened you would have no warranty to claim against.

Is that likely? They may be hot but stolen is more likely to be genuine? Sounds too good to be true then, is what you are saying?

I just know I wouldn't trust anything in my PSP other than a stick bought from a reputable source. It's just not worth it for the sake of a few pounds.

here's one melted stick http://forums.qj.net/showthread.php?t=39740&highlight=melt
there are other similar tales in other forums.
Thats why I only buy the clear Sandisk sticks. I don't think the3se have been faked yet. It's harder and more expensive to fake the transparent cases, and the chip has to be printed because you can see it.

edit: someone posted this in that same thread:
Quote:
Just to add my experiences...

I had the very same iVava memory card reader and about 4 months ago i plugged my Sony 1Gb mem stick into it and got no response followed by a strange burning smell. Turns out my card had melted inside and died (you could actually see a slightly melted patch on the card.

I later found out that the memory card was fake and that it wasn't the fault of the card reader. Maybe the iVava readers don't like fake cards
