The movies worked fine on my PAL Xbox set to default video mode even though the game is NTSC - no skipping or blockiness.
As for the game it seemed merely better than average - typically of the Sonic series lovely FMV scenes, bold colorful graphics, a real sense of speed for once correctly applied to a game where overwhelming speed doesn't make the game unplayable or cause havoc with the ingame camera and all the old characters are in there plus I noticed there are several empty spaces when selecting characters presumably for the ones which become unlocked upon meeting certain conditions within the game. The usual game modes are in there too - Story Mode, Single race, Tag Race and even multiplayer splitscreen with upto four players.
Its very hard to put the game into a genre bracket along with other games, it does have that snowboard/hoverboard element about it but its all about speed you don't have to worry about making fine corrections to your boards angle or edging when cornering/landing or traversing bumpy terrain as the courses are pretty much flat affairs more along the lines of games like Wipeout or F-Zero with the odd jumps that you can trick off to gain speed. As you'd expect there are also powerups, boost pads, some sort of wind tunnels dotted along the course which when entered can be used to jet along the tracks with minimal input from yourself and you can also slipstream other riders.
Personally even though its a quite different gaming experience more in the mould of the flying parts in Diddy Kong Racing I preferred Freaky Flyers on the Xbox even the Crash racing games to Sonic Riders. Sonic Riders has a good sense of speed and enough to keep die hard Sonic fans interested but it doesn't do enough to compete with your F-Zeros, WipeOuts and SSX's all of which are games that commit to a more defined genre and as a result dominate rather than trying to be a jack of all trades, master of nothing.
Game didn't work off a multi disc by the way incase anyone else was thinking of sticking it on a disc with another game.

Yeah, I was gonna fall back on the good game for the kids line. Truth be told though the game has the sort of unnessecarily over complex game mechanics and steep difficulty that make it unsuitable for kids.
I'd say im pretty good at the vast majority of stuff that I play, I can complete most games within several hours to a couple of days (depending on the type of game) and find in racing games certainly in the early stages one or two attempts is enough to clear the stage. This game though is a different matter, the difficulty is ramped up to the point where you struggle to complete stages even after several attempts and when you do, you feel it was a matter of luck rather than skill - something which I can't stand in any genre of game.
Theres allsorts going on on the tracks too, the slipstreaming, tricking off ramps and landing perfectly to gain speed, hairpins which require the use of the shoulder buttons to dig your board in and gain grip, sheer drops, there are areas where you have to rotate the analogue sticks clockwise/counter clockwise to gain speed as your character is automatically guided through white water rapids or rides a preset route on the back of a giant centipede!!.
Its a shame that the actual racing within the game is ultimately flawed because some of the tracks are great and theres a wad of boards and riders to unlock/buy.
