Hi,

i'm currently at work and i just formatted a toshiba laptop. We work with al ot of differrent laptops (some dells, some tishiba, some fujitsu's). After it was formatted i inserted a windows XP installation disk (one i received with a dell laptop) and tried to install it on the toshiba.
The setup went without any problems, but when i boot the computer, it says i have 30 days to activate my copy of windows. When i want to activate it trough internet, it asks for the Key. I flip the laptop over, and copy the liscence key in the required box. he checks the key and always comes back negative... i can't understand why i can't activate windows. the key is correct, i tried with 2 different keys, and none of them are accepted...

does anyone have an explanation for this? or even better: a solution?

If you are using legit software and license key, theres no reason why you cant contact Microsoft and have them either check it or provide one you can use. I work in a computer shop and have activated Windows XP no end of times but never been asked for the license key when activating over the internet.

I think you can only activate it over the internet 3 or 4 times, I'm not sure how many, but after that you have to activate it by phone.

No Im not sure about that. I dont think there is no set number of times to activate over the internet.

How does Microsoft Product Activation work?

Product Activation works by validating that the software's product key, required as part of product installation, has not been used on more PCs than is allowed by the software's end user license agreement (EULA). In general, Windows XP can be installed on one PC and Office 2003 or Office XP can be installed on one PC and the laptop computer used by the user of the one PC. (For specifics, please see the EULA accompanying your product.) Product key information, in the form of the product ID, is sent along with a "hardware hash" (a non-unique number generated from the PC's hardware configuration) to Microsoft's activation system during activation. In Windows XP SP1, the product key itself is sent in addition to the product ID. Activation is completed either directly via the Internet or by a telephone call to a customer service representative. Activations on the same PC using the same product key are unlimited. Product Activation discourages piracy by limiting the number of times a product key can be activated on different PCs.

Thanks for all the help. I just called MS and they made me enter a 60 digit number on the phone pad, after that they said it was not valid and i finally had an operator on the line.
She gave me another series of number which i had to enter in windows, problem was solved. I hope i won't have to do that every time i format a computer, because i'm gonna be calling them a lot Smile

Mut, it's the Pro Corporate version that don't need activation. The regular Pro version still needs to be activated.
