What tool are you using for converting DVD to Avi? I use BitRipper. May be exist something better?

I haven't done it in a while, but I used to use this method from doom9

GordianKnot / VirtualDub using AviSynth scripts ... best quality, but not a one click solution... There a quite a lot of AVS plugins that can do wonders for encoding ...

i use staxrip

an easy to use dvd to avi with excellent quality output
