I bought 5.1 channel headphones and there's no volume control on it, so I guess it's using Window's sliders, and even when it's maxed, it's really not loud enough.
Any tricks to pump up the Windows volume bar ?
Much appreciated.

The VLC media player solved that problem for me. Movie sound that was inaudible on the Windows player, was loud and clear on the VLC.

You have a problem if it is not loud with windows sliders set to maximum.
If it is AC3 audio on a downloaded file then it's likely you need to tweak that filter.
You should also look into your sound cards settings. Is it even capable of 5.1 audio?
