following my recent post http://www.nfohump.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18442
just felt like making a new one, as I said, I've tried to install VMWare and within a windows VMware enviroment, installed X3 reunion, and the game just worked without sfn nightmare or any other kind of emulation. please post here if you try and have the same great result, so then maybe we make sure we beat starforce 3.5+

But surely installing it inside of VMware will see a fairly large drop in performance?

X3 = Starforce 3.5.10.6.

Unless a new version of VMWare has been released Starforce detects VMWare and won't run.

I'm quite surprised that no-one has tried this before, VMWare has never been able to run Starforce games as far as I'm aware, and due to the driver hooking Starforce does it demands access to a real machine beyond the level of emulation VMWare can provide.

VMWare is really just a driver in its' own right after all, a hardware abstraction layer sitting on top of the normal Windows one.

Of course, if it really does work Starforce have a bugged version of their protection (again) Smile

so is the long waited IDE Jammer from DT Team, VMWare released a new version the past week, but that's not the point, the point is exploring ways to play starforce games without extreme measures like IDE unplugging, as for the perfomance, X3 is a very heavy game, but even so, (if you select VMWare hardware options to maximum, you should not have a huge drop of perfomance, just slow down antialiasing a little and some other options, and the game should run just fine, I'm now downloading Prince of Persia, when it ends I will try that one, I can already see next Mirror release of a SF game will be "just install the game within a VMWare enviroment", lol

Starforce doesnt use anything special that could cause any conflicts while running under VMware (they lie about it), to detect it they used VMware i/o port, when its blocked SF runs like a charm. It was a pure and half-legal on the other hand blacklisting, now when new VMware is out its possible they fixed this blacklist method.

Gotcha thanks, knew they used a blacklist and knew they claimed to be incompatible but never actually tried it. Thanks for info.

you create a new virtual machine and start it. then you put in a windows or linux boot disc in your drive and install it.
after that you can use it as a 2nd pc.

This is a thread about VMWare not about how to generally defeat SF there are loads of threads all over this forum about that, easy to find.
