Intel needs to admit defeat... Their mobile chips probably cost $100. Here, someone managed to build an entire computer for less than that, complete with keyboard, LCD, storage, wireless, etc.
I say, OLPC is a great project. The internet isn't about being rich or poor, it's about many people being equal. I think it's wondeful that this project exists. What I'm worried about, though, is that since it's being distributed to poor countries where to the average person $100 is a massive amount of money, these could be stolen at so many different levels and re-distributed or resold, only to pop up on eBay for $150. So many of these could get into hands other than those of children.
On a side note, when I saw that AMD was on the board of OLPC, that finalized my decision to buy their CPU for my next computer. Whatever they make off a $350 CPU (I'd imagine $100-150), should subsidize a few of the 500MHz chips. |
