In todays computer world for the casual consumer 64bit is barely used. However the theoretical advantage from 64bit is very high. And as far as I have understood it really gives a great advantage in the server business.
A few years ago then 64bit was very exclusive and still in development I heard some numbers saying that a 64bit CPU running at 700MHz would be as effective as a 32bit CPU running at 1.5GHz. No idea if it is true or not.
When it comes to games it is much more difficult as very few games uses any 64bit instructions at all. But I am pretty certain a game developed for 64bit along with 64bit drivers really would make a difference. Sadly enough that seems to be further into the future.
Games such as FarCry, Chronicles of Riddick and UT 2004 are now native 64-bit executables. Whilst out of the box they are 32-bit, some large patches later they have full 64-bit support.
But from out of the box I can't think of a game that is truly 64-bit from the outset.
The 64-bit support for the above games is merely superficial I'd agree. I'd say some of the special effects and game improvements could have been done for 32-bit environments, but it's still earlyish days for 64-bit Windows operating systems.
Of course it's marketing, same as with PCI-e and SATA.
