Well I don't have quite much info but from the nfo:

Quote:
Fight in the theatre of war that changed the world forever. Battle alongside your compatriots on some of the most inhospitable environments of the Eastern Front in Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 RO places you in the most realistic WWII first-person multi-player combat to date on the PC, allowing the player to fight through some of the most intense combat of the war. You can play as infantry, using a wide range of infantry weapons, or crew one of the many armoured combat vehicles available in the game, from half-tracks all the way through to the most famous German and Soviet heavy tanks. You can engage the enemy with everything from your bayonet at close quarters up to the massive 122mm cannon on the Soviet IS-2. And if that isn't enough, find an officer and a radio to call in thunderous artillery strikes to shake the enemy loose

I played it, it needs some graphics optimization. Apart from that it's pretty good if your into Valve games Very Happy.

Is this thing a standalone based on the HL2 engine or does it actually need HL2 and Steam installed?

It's not a Valve game in any way, unless you consider it a Valve game since it comes via Valve servers.

Thanks for useful reply Bnf, one more thing tho...can I use the scene release if I got a legit copy of HL2 and all the Steam games/mods installed up properly? or would that might mess up things?

It's standalone, you don't need anything to play it, but you need steam to play online, like the NFO says.

This may be a n00b question, but i've never used steam so bear with me. How exactly does steam work? Is it possible to download this release of RO and play it online with steam without paying any money, or do you have to buy steam? Or how does it work exactly?

STEAM is free but you need to pay for the games by either way with your Credit Card over STEAM or when you buy the game in store and you register the cd key of a game in STEAM
