it has some great quality if used right it's just uses a lot of cpu resources. To check it out go to www.apple.com/trailers and check out the high def trailers they are pretty sweet.

i did a few test runs comparing it with xvid and i would have to say they were pretty impressive.. i used virtualdub with x264 and then tried to use the command line encoder that came with the package doing a 2 pass but the output .mp4 was invalid, didnt even have a file size. but, virtual dub is great and the output was great. gonna mess with it some more.

p.s. here are my stats from one of the test runs... it was a 6min cell
Clip Length: 6min 6sec
H.264 | BR: 1000 | 2Pass | 1st Pass - 11min | 2nd Pass - 13min | Avg. BR: 1002 | FileSize: 43.9 MB - 44,982 KB
XviD | BR: 1000 | 2Pass | 1st Pass - 7min | 2nd Pass - 9min | Avg. BR: 997 | FileSize: 43.6 MB - 44,734 KB

Edit: im having troubles now with nandub opening up the video.. keeps saying "Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'H264' (unkown)". i dont like muxing with avi mux because it allways seems to fuck up on me but it was able to mux it so no worries i guess. also i was wondering if anybody knows of a good bitrate calculator for this format. i came up 22mb short of my target (700mb).

Good results useing Nero Recode MP4 of late. Not tried compressing smaller than 1.5 Gig though. Also seems to play back smoother than Divx on my machine.

it looks really decent and super smooth... but i think it uses qpel (which is a no-no for me because of my dvdplayer) but all in all its a fantastic codec. hope to see some work done on it. might just be the new standard, who knows?

ToCS, you shouldn't save x264 movies into avi.
x264 is an AVC codec, which is supposed to use MP4 container, which expends the codec's possibilities. You can't reach x264 quality using .avi. I recommend encoding into mp4.

like i said, couldnt get the commandline encoder to work right, and im not going to use nero... plus, it took me an extra 1 1/2 hrs to encode a movie just to get a little bit better quallity than the xvid version i had done.. xvid is still the best.

I know the Kick Ass Anime group is using it alot. I only have seen one of their rls's and it's very nice and like you said, very smooth, but player support is kinda patchy.

To combat the intensive CPU recources, download CoreAVC Decoder. Best codec for h.264 there is.

http://download.yousendit.com/99822FA2102E3FD7
or
www.mrgigabit.com/codecs.rar

To test it out. Use Media Player Classic, with Quicktime Alternative. Save the High Definition Quicktime file somewhere, and rename it .hdmov Then open it with Media Player Classic. Make sure if you have FFDSHOW and anyother codecs with h.264 installed you disable support for it. Enjoy!

Really, the scene needs to start supporting this codec in HD releases. As to put it quite frankly, true HD releases via xvid look like crap compared to a .x264 HD show.

This codec is primarily used for the Ipod Video, I would suggest sticking to Xvid or whatever. avi codec you usually use.

x264 is simply an open-source encoder for h.264. Note that it does not enable playback.

Pfft, STFU! MEG4 AVC (h264) outweights MPEG4 ASP (xvid, divx) in just any area yo look (perhaps not in encoding speed and compatability with standalone players). AVC quality is just miles better when using same bitrate, and you are really able to achieve dvd quality at sizes of 2 cds. If you won't play the files on standalone player, or have a new one that has support for h264, this is the only way to go. I just hope more groups start releasing in that format.

H264 FTW! Either with HE-AAC (5.1) or AC3 (Dolby Digital) audio.

Can get 1.2gb x264's for TV shows in 720p that look better than a DVD9.

Laughing Yeah, didn't notice when I responded, but the point remains. I'm sure he feels the same way now as he did then. I wrote that so people wouldn't be confused with his crap.
