Hi,

Can someone please tell me how can you tell if you have either a 32-bit or 64-bit PCI slot on your computer? I have an Intel D850GB. I searched for it on the web but could not find the answer. Thank you in advance.

LOL

But to the point.. Your motherboard already has plenty of 32bit PCI slots, they're the yellow things, as for 64Bit slots you can't "ADD" one to your motherboard, and very few desktop boards hold them, as 64Bit cards are not generally used by an average user. You will find 64Bit slots in almost all server systems, so if you have a need for them I would suggest you buy yourself a Xeon system.. Bare in mind the difference between a desktop xeon system and a server xeon system - One has no room for graphics expansion (server system).

What use do you have for 64bit PCI? One of the only cards I've seen that has needed 64bit PCI is a huge server RAID card.

Good Gbit NIC's and SCSI controller are usually 64bit pci these days, but they usually fit in 32bit slots aswell. But be aware that there are 5V and 3.3V 64bit pci cards out on the market.

Very good points, the 64Bit nics are generally multi port, have onboard encryption or are 10Gbit.

I am thinking of upgrading my home network. I was looking at the Linksys website and found that they have two different Gigabit NIC cards. The model numbers are EG1032 an EG1064. Therefor I was wondering how I can tell if I had a 32bit or 64bit PCI slots.

The simplest way is that 64Bit slots are twice the size of 32bit slots Smile! Also, as meantioned, desktop boards rarely (if at all?) come with 64bit PCI.

I'm only guessing here, but looking at the model numbers i'd say that the EG1032 is 32bit and the EG1064 is 64 bit Wink

sidenote: Why is this still in the noob section?...lazy mods these days Razz

The Intel Pro 1000GT is a very good card, if you are not on a tight budget. Intel's network chips still have the lowest cpu utilization by far, meaning less work for your cpu, and their drivers are also on top. Ask syn Wink
