Hello all,
I've recently moved into the relm of HD Television, and i'm about to install Windows XP MCE so that I can more easily output to my HDTV.
I've had lots of issues getting the whole setup working well on XP Pro, so I've decided to move over a platform built for just what I want.
Firstly, I just want to ask, after a fresh install of XP MCE, should I just install FFDSHOW? Does this cover everything? Is it the best? Does it do all of the hd formats (mkv, .ts, .wmv, .avi)?
The reason I ask is because i've downloaded a range of different formats - and any which state that are 1080p (even if the file size is just 8-9gig) do not play - they show a frame every 10 seconds and the audio just continues. I doubt it's my machine as i've got a 3800 dual core, with 2 gig of fast ddr memory!
Anyway, during the install hopefully i'll get some comments / suggestions which I can use as soon as it's finished!
Cheers guys

FFDSHOW is not recommended when dealing with HD h264 content. It uses the x264 which is buggy, slow and quality-wise is still lacking. I'd recommend using CoreAVC. It's the best codec for h264 you can find. Install FFDSHOW for the audio codecs, as it has everything you need.

As the name implies, it only takes care of MPEG-4 AVC, which is H264.

Probably a little late to respond to this but if you use CoreAVC Pro (disable the h.264 in the FFFDSHOW so it uses coreavc instead) It'll support the use of dual core to help the movie run smoother.

OK, I feel compelled to post here, because I see I've posted crap before. After many tests, I have to say CoreAVC is actually not recommended at all (on the contrary to what I've posted before). CoreAVC has some major issues with some h264 encodings, issues that cause graphics anomalies and blocking... Those issues are present in CoreAVC 1.3 Rro, so yeah, get ffdshow and use that. It's a bit slow, but what you see is what you get.

FFdshow's decoder ran like shit for me. Switched to coreavc pro Version 1.1.0.5 and not a single issue yet

Deelix, use ffdshow for everything, be it 720p, 1080i or 1080p. CoreAVC in its current form is flawed.
