I am running a P4 with an x800 Pro ....512 RAM

I am running FEAR with damon tools and the virtual drive hider....

The install went fine....when I play the game though....I get slow downs a lot and I can hear/see my hard drive light on almost constantly. In fact, when ever it slows down...I see the hard drive running.

What tweaks/settings can I run to play this game? I already lowered shadows to medium and resol to 1024. I don't know what computer/video card settings are...should I mess with them? I also get an occasion message that my virtual memory is low. Never seen that before.

I have run Doom 3, HF2, Fable...etc. without any problems.

Please help.

thanks

Nit

So I should buy more memory? There are no settings to fix it? Weird...Doom 3, HL2....neither had any problems.

I tend to turn my VM off, then it is forced to use the RAM, but I have 2gb 3200, so I guess I can do that without worrying :\.. maybe try it?

Try playing BF2 with 512MB. Just spend the $70 or whatever it is for another stick. Ain't no thang.

That's just the problem Si. Accessing virtual memory if far slower and will cause stuttering because of the hard drive access. Increasing virtual memory will not help.

That's not a good thing to do even if you have that much memory.. Windows needs VM in order to operate correctly. Setting it to zero does not force windows to use RAM..

While you are right, there are faster and slower hard drives, still hard drive speeds are around 20 times slower than ddr rams. Compare 150Mbytes/sec for SATA hdds vs. 2400-3200Mbytes/s for rams (theoretical speeds, but still...)
The point is, once you are using virtual memory, your game gets choppy Razz
