Okay hockey fans we're a few weeks into the season... what do you think of the new revamped NHL?
Personally I'm not overly impressed with what I've seen for the most part. It's been nothing but power plays and penalty kills they're exciting and all but it kinda wears on me when 18 outta twenty mins of the period have been one team or the other on the power play.Don't get me wrong it's not all bad..the gameplay seems faster and there seem to be more quality scoring chances and odd man rushes but you've got defenceman who are completely inhibited in doing their role as defence.
They can't hit or move anyone in front of the nets...hell if they even brush up against someone without the puck it's an interference call.I don't know I'll always enjoy the game but some of the changes this year are hard to get used to and I can only imagine what some of the players are going through trying to adjust.
I think they need to do some more tinkering with some of the rules/penalties to find a better balance of offence and defence.Just my opinion.

I like the fast paced game play, but some of the rules are a lil excessive. Alot of refs are calling any sort of contact basically, which is beyond bullshit.
Hockey is about smashing a man through the boards, stealing the puck and scoring...i mean, its the NHL, that the sissy ass euro leagues where checking is frowned upon...If I wanted to watch european hockey, I'd get the channels ya know?

I like Canadian hockey, tough, rough, break your face hockey - along with the skating skills and such.

But, honestly, is there anything like seeing a rookie come across the blue with his head down and get smoked by some 6'4 20lbs'er? I love seeing that shit, I love seeing the fights. ive only seen one fight this season they actually let go.
Both guys who were fighting were true hockey players. What i mean is, guy a knocked guy b's helmet off...so instead of feeding the guy shots, he took his helmet off and made it fair and continued the fight. Thats pure class and respect. I wish I could remember who was involved in the scrap.

yeah I remember seeing the highlights of that fight on TSN or sumfin.Thats how fights should be and yeah this aint european hockey there should be hitting and checking but with the new rules and refs calling the game alot tighter I think we're not gonna see as much as we used to which is a damn shame cause as I said before it's an integrel part of the game and now your defencemen are almost helpless in doing their jobs. They really have to allow more checking/bodywork in front of the nets.I was watching the edmonton/colorado game last night and the goalies were just getting bolled right over.It was horrible. The montreal/Philly game was no better with basically the whole game being power plays. We won in the end but it's just not the same type of competitiveness when one team or both is constantly penalized.

Yeah, i think they should go back to some of the old rules/allowances.

Supposedly, they made these new rules to attract more american fans...which is fuckin retarded...just like that "glowing puck" thing they tried a few years ago during an all-star game. Honestly, if ur too stupid to follow a BLACK puck on WHITE ice, then u shouldnt be allowed to have a tv, simple as that.

And alot of the frowning on checking comes from the US too....everyone i know who plays hockey or is a real hockey fan thinks that checking is an essential part of the game. I mean, someone wants to watch a non violent sport, watch baseball. Hockey is about breakin faces and scoring goals ya know?
Even Don Cherry was bitching about that last week on Coach's Corner - now he's a true Canadian, makes me proud to be Canadian Smile I have so much respect for him

LOLOLOL the "glowing puck".That was when I think FOX or ABC got broadcasting rights for a year.Whatta Joke that was.
Yeah new rules changes to attract new american fans.....Maybe if Bettman and the league actually placed teams in the states where's there's a market for them it would would be different. Most of the new expansion teams of the past 8 years or so barely even have winter so why the hell are they gonna be interested in hockey? They expanded too fast and too south and now are paying the price in those cities with poor attendance.Look at Tampa Bay you think if they are a bottom dwelling team this year they're gonna get half the attendance they did last year?I think alot of these southern expansion teams the only time they'll have a decent fan base is if they make a run for the cup but if they have a bad cpl seasons there will be no support from the locals cause they only care about the team as long as they're newsworthy. There's no loyalty from a market who doesn't understand the game and doesn't have a winter season with snow.

Exactly, well said dude. Most americans dont understand hockey or simply aren't interested...they should have focused on expanding the NHL to eastern canada, like newfie and nova scotia...I mean, right now, most east-coasters are either Canadien or Maple Leaf fans, I think they deserve their own teams and the teams would be supported locally.
Hockey is Canada's game, we need more Canadian teams...how many teams we have?
Lets count

Leafs
Canadiens
Flames
Canucks....and I think thats it right? We used to have the Jets but they went to phoenix and the nordiques went to colorado...

Its sad many good ol canadian boys play for american teams ala Sydney Crosby.

haha wtf. I still say Colorado is Quebec, and I hate them for that. Phoenix may as well be winnipeg still too, especially with Gretzky owning them.

The new NHL is exactly what I want in a night of entertainment. I watch hockey to see goals scored and huge hits thrown, not small interference hits, hooking and holding a guy. Give it some time with these new rules, and let the players get comfortable. You'll see way more HUGE hits than before. This is because guys will be skating soooo much faster without the obstruction and then lets say Dion Phaneuf from Calgary is on the ice. Good night. The guy will fucking swallow his tongue. I'm EXTREEEEEMEEELLLYYY pleased with the absurd number of calls right now. It means we're not going to have to deal with the stuff that disrupts the back and forth action. I'm still seeing plenty of hits, but I'm on the edge of my seat.

More goals = good
shootouts = bad, should be continuous OT until there is a winner
goalie penalty for going outside his area = good
no red line = good
obstruction/interference calls = too soon to tell, like phluxed said, let them get used to it Wink
touch up off side=good

so all in all, I don't mind the new NHL Very Happy

yeah it seems the refs have loosened up a bit as the season has gone on but still some of the calls are horrendous especially some for penalty shots.the game definitely has more end to end action and the speedy and skilled players are getting more room to move without all the holding.A couple weeks ago they board of governers announced they that revenues were actually up and the cap would be raised next year,so obviously the changes have had an effect in a positive way in that it's attacting more people and is more exciting for people to watch.I just hope the don't institute the shootout in the playoffs, they should keep it the way it is and let them play till someone scores. Also I'm not a huge fan of the shootout but it seems to be good for the sport but I would like to see them extend the overtime period to at least 10 mins if not a full twenty before going to the shootout.

most americans dont like hockey because theres to many other sports, barley any of my friends here in jersey like it, it barley exists in this state, even with thier success, its big in a few places like colorado, boston , detroit, but the game wont survive unless they start getting a bigger fanbase, they gotta score the big tv contracts with stations like fox and abc, nbc, I mean like look at the NFL, its TV contract alone is worth more than the whole NHL(Players/Teams/Arenas) We can barley get games on tv down here accept on outdoor life network. Its a beat of a game, just poorley marketed.

I didnt know it was like that in the US

Hockey is fuckin HUGE in Canada, like, HUGE.
Junior World Cup Gold Medal Game Canada vs Russia tomorrow Very Happy We watch all hockey...well, I dont like the chl and shit like that, but the OHL, NHL and International events I watch or attend.

The NHL will never die...I'd LOVE to see it go back to the original 6 teams, thatd be fuckin awesome. They would make SO much money, its not funny.

Most of my family in florida (they're americans, not snowbirds) didn't even know they had a professional hockey team, let alone two of them including a stanley cup winner.

It's weird considering the hoopla around hockey up here.

Another thing about the OLN being the carrier of NHL in the US ... I'm pretty sure that means no high definition games at all. That's not going to score any new fans. Hockeys looks awesome in HD.

That would ruin the game going back to original 6, and OHL is CHL.
