Have you thought about laser eye surgery?
I've been lazy, but I'm getting some contacts soon ... starting to get sick of my glasses, although I've only had to wear them full-time for 3-4 years.... my prescription is something like +1.5 .. not strong.

What is a "lazy right eye" ?
I recomend lenses - wear them for several years now and never had a problem... it needs some time to get used to it, but it definatly better than glasses

hmmm...
laser operations... thats no good with 11+ You never know how your eyes react over time and theres no way back.
Theres another method - they can change the lens - easy like the grey star operation and its reversible/adjustable

I have this thing called Nystagmus
Quote: | Nystagmus is characterised by an involuntary movement of the eyes, which often seriously reduces vision. Many people with this condition are partially sighted; some are registered blind; few can drive a car; most encounter some difficulties in every day life - both practical and social - and some lose out on education and employment opportunities.
Depth of field vision is reduced by nystagmus with a result that sufferers may be prone to tripping or clumsiness. Co-ordination is usually adequate for most tasks, but nystagmus sufferers are unlikely to excel at sports needing good hand to eye co-ordination.
Incidence. Experts agree that nystagmus affects about one in a thousand people. One survey in Oxfordshire identified one in every 670 children by the age of two as having nystagmus. The flautist James Galway, our patron, is probably the best known person in Britain with nystagmus.
Causes. Nystagmus may be inherited or result from a sensory problem. In some cases it occurs for no known reason. It can also develop in later life, sometimes as a result of an accident or a range of illnesses, especially those affecting the motor system. You should always consult a doctor if you or a member of your family has nystagmus.
Effects. Nystagmus affects different people in different ways. While there are general patterns, good advice for one person may be inappropriate or even bad for another, especially where other eye problems are present. |
It isn´t as bad as this text may portrait it, alteast not for me. Sure, w/o glasses my vision is very blurry from about 30 cm from mo eye, then the farther away it gets, the more blurry it becomes. But at 30 cm or so, and closer i see as perfect as any human would. I´m fine if i wear glasses(contacts (i have a drivers-license for example )
I´ve had glasses for 18 years, until i started with contacts. For me it´s wonderful, i have no probs at all. Well sometimes it can irritate just a bit, but nothing else. There is always a risk of infection, but as your optician says, you run a higher risk of getting one, but how much bigger is the risk? I´d go for a secind opinion. See an eye-specialst at a hospital or just visit some other optician.

I dont think the risk of infection (if you do everything right) is too high, and i doubt an infection would be so bad (as in eyes rolling out lol), maybe you could ask another optician for advice?

Think Awe is right ... you're prescription is too high for laser eye surg ..
Quote: | Is my prescription too severe to allow for laser correction?
Having very bad eyesight does not interfere with your suitability for laser surgery, in most cases. Your vision will improve noticeably, although the level of improvement you experience does depend upon the degree of your current prescription. London Vision Clinic treats patients with longsightness (up to +4.00D), shortsightness (up to -12.50D) with or without astigmatism (up to -6.00D). During your Initial Screening, our eye care professionals will outline the results you personally can expect to achieve. More information on suitability is available here. |

price anyways ...
Quote: | The price of standard LASIK is £1250 per eye and Wavefront LASIK is £1650 per eye. The consultation is free of charge. Our charges include all follow – up checks, medication and any care you require for a minimum of 12 months. |

thx for the info nouseforaname. my eyes are -6 and -5.5 and i have astigmation or whatever of 3.5. im glad to read i can still get my eyes fixed like that. I really hate wearing glasses. its annoying to sport, to swim, to sleep and wake up.
and watergem if money isnt a problem then atleast try having them and if you get problems with your eyes you change back to your glasses
and for laser stuff. i would do one eye, see if it worked and then do the other so i dont turn out worse or blind (happens in 1% of cases)

cornea... thats the word I didn`t know ^^
the higher your perscription is the more of it will be cut during this laser operation.
There are no studies about the effects after 20/30 years.
I have a high perscription myself and every serious doc I spoke to said to me I shoudn`t do it.
But I`m always watching the development of new technics.
Waking up and seeing sharp without having to put on your glasses/lenses would be fantastic... :/

lenses are a peace of cake to put in and take out after a while, and you can get them for halve price on internet. but if i was you and your job permits it i would look into laser surgery, it solves so much hassle. it may be expensive but in the long run you will save alot.

Infection risk with regular linses is extremly low. Do things about what they say and no problems should come out of it.

i tried contacts a few years ago.
I had to learn to touch my eyes which was hard, the doc told me its easier for girls as their used to eye make up etc.
Once i got used to putting them in they didnt feel too bad and after a few hours u nearly forgot they were there.
But my job was impossible fault finding surface mount pcbs with tiny parts - I'm ssure they werent the right prescription.
I gave up and went back to specs
