I have 2 computers. I am getting ready to do a full restore on "Computer 1" later this week so I want to save all the data I have. I want to save it all in Comp2.

Comp2 has a Dvd burner so I want to transfer my data from Comp1 to Comp2. How would I go about doing this?

take the hard drive out of comp 1 and install in comp 2. that's probably the easiest/fastest way.

Or if they are both on a network, you can just copy files to comp2 that way...

AHt are those things called that people plug into their laptops? Its like a USB cartridge thing I heard that can hold a few GBs? Can I just use that to transfer data from Comp1 to Comp2?

a pen drive? would take a mlong time. the only things you need to do the network way is a network card (in each comp) and a cable (Ethernet most likely)

The easiest way of all though is to simply remove 1 of the harddrives and plug it into another.

I think theyre called like USB flash drive. I dont really need to store much data. I need to store about 4gb while i restore my comp and then put the data back. So Im thinking of getting a 1gb usb flashdrive and then transfer all my data to comp2 and then restore comp1 and then transfer all the data back to comp1 after restoring.

Would that work?

yes pendrive = flash drive. my point would be it's a lot more expensive for a pen drive though. Unless you're gonna be using it other than in this instance I wouldn't 'invest' my money on a pen drive, a simple DVD will be enough, or a hard drive switch. you're making it appear to be a mammouth task when it's really 5 minutes at most.

No, because copying 1GB on USB flash drive would take ages.. I would move the HDD's from 1 to 2 (like nouseforaname and Sublime have told you).. If you don't want to move all HDD's why not move DVD burner from 2 to 1? If you have network cards on both computers you could buy crossover network cable and connect them directly. Or you could buy A-A USB cable and have USB network.. There are probably even more ways to do it Smile

I cannot change the harddrives. I have a DVD burner only on Comp2. And I cannot move the DVD burner into Comp1.

Copying data to USB flash drive is slow? I thought it's like burning a cd. Just transfer the data to the flash drive.

yeah, any way you do it ... by now you could have been done. you can use a flash drive if you want. who cares if it takes 20 or 30 minutes longer if that's all you feel like doing. Razz

Hmm...all I do is throw up an ftp to the computer I want to store shit on, and send away...doesnt take long as i max out my ethernet card at 10mb/sec
But for some reason, the speed doesnt work for everyone, like my bud tried to send shit to one of his 6 cpu's via ftp (all in the same room too) and it was going like 50kb/sec
I'd suggest trying it....
Or do what nouse said and just remove the hd and put it in the one u want the information on.
Either I use ftp or remove and transfer the hd...simple, 5 minute procedure (well, not 5 mins for me....those little fuckin screws piss me off and give me enough trouble - not to mention who the fuck has a phillips head screwdriver that is small enough to get into those screws? well, i know u can by cpu repair kits that have lil screwdrivers, but Im too lazy and havent seen them around).

I have decided that I will just use 10 CD-Rs to keep my data while I restore. I find it the most easiest way since there is no DVD burner on this comp. And I cannot bring the DVD burner from the other comp to here it would be too much hassle.

Alright I think I want to bring the dvd drive to comp1. Now what I would liek to know is would be a big hassle to bring that drive here and put a CDRW dirve there. Would I need to install drivers and stuff?

Just connect power cable and IDE cable the same way they are connected in comp 2 making sure that red wire of IDE cable is the nearest to the power connector. Windows will automatically find new hardware and everything. Then install Nero or some other burning tool and you're set..

Ok thanks. I also wanna know if I should buy DVD-R or DVD+R I think I posted this before. On my DVDRW drive, in the front it says "DVD+R DL" and then it says "DVD+ReWritable". ANd on the left side it says "DVD" and under that it says "R/RW".

You can see the DVD writer specifications in Nero, just goto Recorder -> Choose recorder and look it up. But I think it's pretty obvious that you need DVD+R discs Wink

LOL if you're moving DVD burner you should move HDD too - it's easy and fast and no problem solution!
