Does the swap magic trick work with the Slim PS2? Can I just unpop the top off the console and put my swap magic disk in etc.. etc.. ?

yes swapmagic works fine, Black slimline version you can use magic switch pro and swapmagic discs which leaves lid intact but you cannot close it, or buy a slimline fliptop and swapmagic discs.
Silver Satin version needs Magic Switch Pro v2, and the lids close on these, they have been redesigned by Sony to try and stop it but infact they did us a favour and allowed lid to close. This is my setup and been playing with no troubles this way, as i didn't want to void the warrenty and ruin the laser with these iffy matrix infinity modchip and fixes.

With the slimline, you can close the lid if you remove the top and put a piece of heavy duty tape on the back sensor. I know because I've done it, I used this site to help me. http://www.jspot.net/ps2.htm
