Maxtor is great I would totally recommend one. I have um a few Maxtors. More than a Tb in space in total. About 7 or 8 drives in total and never a problem with any of them.

Raptors are a waste of money for storage, they cost a shit load more and you wont use the speed.

I'd say maxtor and western digital are the two best bets (not as familiar with the relatively new players...)

Does your mobo support NCQ? if so a 7200 sata WD w/ 16mb cache and NCQ performs *almost* as fast as a 10,000 without the additional heat and noise (i dont know if noise is a factor, but usually faster things are noisier ) anyways... unless your doing some intensive hard drive stuff it shouldn't make that much of a difference, a few milliseconds here and there...

Raptor drives are wonderful for installing windows and select applications and games. I currently have a machine running windows and games from a raptor with all movies and the like on a RAID. If your computer is fast enough, get the raptor, if its just a mid end machine, don't bother, it won't make a difference.

A computer is limited by its slowest component, whether it be processor, ram speeds or timings, or the hard drive speed.
