I suppose this might not be the right spot, but it uses a computer and thus could belong in this section
Anyways.
So I'm getting a new digital camera...
Needs:
.Over 4 megapixels
.Over 3x zoom, preferably high
.Good movie quality
.Under 600$
.Very good picture quality
.A fair amount of features...
So... The price range eliminated dSLR's (and they don't take movies, which I need...) more than 3x zoom eliminated most ultra-compact cameras, and good movie quality eliminated most other typical sized digital camera's so I'm left looking at the following two cameras:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonydsch1/
and
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canons2is/
Other cameras were mentioned of similar style, but these two stood out on top.
I am currently leaning towards the Canon, as it can zoom while taking movies (do any other cameras do this? none that I know, very cool), has a swivel LCD (yes it's smaller, but the function of a small swivel LCD is much more useful for me than a slightly larger one that sits still..), uses SD cards, which are easy to obtain (if I ever run out of space I can use my dad's) as opposed to the proprietry sony shit. and the movie mode has trouble finding focus at full zoom... finally, I have to admit part of it is just that I've always been a canon fan and sony has seemed more of a camera that a novice would pick up (although the DSC H1 is liked more by above average photographers, the above reasons are pushing me towards the canon...)
So. I get a nice 5 megapixel 12x zoom camera that can take 640.480 (30fps) video's with stereo sound (yeah, it's hot)...
Does anyone know of any cameras coming out that might make me hesitate? or of other similar cameras I might have missed? Thanks for any help. If you have either of these cameras input would be great too...
peace.

Alright, so I've had a few weeks to play around with this baby, and I have to say... I was quite excited about it, and it exceeded my expectations.
The movie mode is incredible, it looks better than videos taken with digital camcorders costing around the same... space is obviously a limitation (~8 minutes per gig) but this is so much better than having a low quality mpeg4 encode to get longer movies.
Something I didn't really think to much of before buying but now find incredibly useful is the high speed continuous shooting. With all cameras you run the risk of a slightly blurry photo due to minute camera movements or subject movements... By using the continuous shooting you practically guarantee yourself a good shot, unless you're focus is off... This is limited to bright rooms and outdoors, but really... unlimited 2.4fps shooting... this feature shouldn't go overlooked.
I haven't had time to play with the macro modes, but judging from some of the pictures on dpreview.com forums, i should be checking it out... apparently you can focus on things touching the lens (not that you would want anything touching the lens )...
anyways... I couldn't be happier, if you are leaning towards this camera i would go for it, you won't be dissapointed (unless you're one of those assholes with a 20 megapixel camera )
