|
 |
I was attacked by the sasser worm a few days ago while I had Norton antivirus and firewall 2004. I was shocked since I always update my virus definitions and windows.
Anyway a co-worker suggested that the Norton anti virus is utter crap, and that I should use an anti virus called kaspersky (www.kaspersky.com). It's pretty cheap and has the best protection against viruses.
I got this kaspersky and frankly I'm quite happy with it. It has the entire Norton's qualities plus several other great tools. Moreover it detected 17 viruses immediately after the installation!
Does anyone here use it or know it? Can I trust it to do the job over Norton?

didn't the sasser worm come through the backdoor of XP and not the firewall and anti-virus?

Yeah but Norton was supposed to identify it as a virus after their security alert and recent updates.

Even so nortons firewall (if setup right) should have blocked sasser from using that meantioned "backdoor".

Well norton is very heavy on any system and it didn't do the job with the sasser. That's why i think it's time to move on to a better and more reliable software than a "label" product.

Well after a few sets of blue screens i have decided to stick to the "label" product and switched back to Norton.
Gonna update it even more often and hope for the best.

It's very known that Norton has bad virus definitions. Very weird because they got a big virus lab that is very high-tech. hmmm..

Updating norton virus definitions is no use if you do not run windows update regularly to close the newest gaps found by these worms.
Closing the holes in windows AND running an anti-virus like norton will be ok to keep out 90% out all threats.

True, the problem with many windows users is that they believe they are protected after installing SP1. That's so rediculous.

Of course i know that! i always update windows and download the latest patches. I didn't download the security fix for the sasser though and that's why i got hit. I thought i had it with my last update (NOT SP1!)

That's been my experience with Norton as well. Ever since Symantec tookover the Norton franchise, my impression is that things have gone downhill. I gave up on Crash Guard (no longer offered by Norton after it embarassingly crashed all over the place) and Delrina Winfax, and then gave up on System Works. There ARE better anti-virus programs out there. Kaspersky and AVG have good reputations. I have used AVG. McAfee is supposed to be even better, but I have not tried any of their products except Stinger, which is a small and specific little program that 's aimed directly at trojans. I like it.

Norton 2002 is a stable release. never crashed my PCs.
Norton 2003 is a crasher. Crashes on most PCs.
Haven't tried 2004, so can't comment.
