PostPosted: Wed, 15th Jun 2005 12:10    Post subject: Premium Usenet Providers
Having lost access to an uber elite FTP I had private account on and not satisfied with torrent downloads, I thought I would try my hand with newsgroups. My ISP (Eclipse Internet) allows access to newsgroups but its not very fast and I am now considering paying for a premium service. I have looked on several sites and searching for recommendations. Giganews and AnonyNews are the ones I find appealing but I am unable to sign up due to the credit card requirements.

Does anyone know of a good premium service provider that would accept debit card payments or possibly even PayPal?

Also am I right in thinking that paying for a service would allow me to use the full bandwith of my 2mb internet connection?

I am currently using Newsbin Pro and it is relatively easy to use. Whilst browsing at work, I have come across newsleecher but I cannot try that until I get home. Is there anything better available?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I like to use Newsleecher. It's userfriendly and has a good super search function.
As for the service provider I wouldn't know, because my ISP has a killer newsgroup server with good retention time and fast speed. Giganews should be good but as you said...you need a credit card for that.

I can't find any that I can use to pay by direct debit card but I have just found Newsfeeds.com which allows PayPal payments. Has anyone heard of this one before or maybe even used it? Or are there others I dont know of? Damn I can see me asking my dad to lend me his Visa card or something lol but I dont want to have to do that if it can be avoided Very Happy

Damn! I just tried signing up for Newsfeeds and it says it will be take 5 days to process with a Paypal payment! I think I will just ask my dad for his Visa. It will be easier and quicker and go with Giganews. So is that a good one? The best one? Very Happy

I've always had a good service with these guys, I would suggest going with them personally, also you get like 3 days to "try before you comit" so you should do that Smile!

Good luck!

3. Don't post any info about where you get your stuff including applications, sources, links, name of webpages and so on. This includes Torrents, Kazaa etc. You are not allowed to discuss this here!

For those saying its "double standards" and against the rules. I can see your point based on the rule above but the general topic is very vauge and is not directly pointing anyone to anything illegal. News services are a fully legal service provided by many different companies and groups and should not fall under the same strict rules as P2P applications. They also provide a service other than "warezing". I would totally understand your points should the thread have said "which server holds the most warez groups and which are they" that would be totally wrong, but the only question really asked was:

Does anyone know of a good premium service provider that would accept debit card payments or possibly even PayPal?

Also am I right in thinking that paying for a service would allow me to use the full bandwith of my 2mb internet connection?

Which are perfectly acceptable in my eyes :\? Anywho, dont want to cause a fuss just wanted to give my 2p in an adult manor Smile!

Well said dude and thanks for your reply! A moderator already closed this once due to the possibility it could cause a flame war but I got it reopened.

I will check out giganews and let you know my opinion!

Keep it nice Smile

Bit Torrent it self isnt either illegal, linux distros, demos, ect. Clearly head shot is talking about getting warez.

Saying that this is not about warez: Gah.
That is like posting thepiratebays website and stating to look at their legal threats : )

lol Laughing.. I never said he wasnt talking about warez Wink Razz! But yeah your right in that sense, still, the questions are answered now and I don't think any harm was done.

I guess its just one of those situations where everyone has a differing opinion. *shrugs*

I am quite sure all his questions would be answered via google, it is not as any secret information was discloused. I guess how newsgroup differ is by that he has to as well later find the right places in the newsgroups to actually find warez in contrast to Bit Torrent links where you actually point the person to the very holy grail spot.

Yeah, its unfortuante how Torrents became so damn popular with the P2P crowd, I wouldnt be supprised if people began to shut down legal torrent sites for hosting freeware files Wink!

Well Ive got it up and running and although I am about 1 hour into my 3 day trial, I am most impressed with Giganews. The best my current ISP could do was 2 connections with 15kb/s each! PFFFT! I now have 4 simultaneous connections and its maxing out my bandwith! What more could I want!? Very Happy

Hey ... look at that ... newshosting.com is upping their retention to 40 days, still $10 less than giganews... I'd say this is the best value for premium usenet access...

Expect a few 'bumps' (disconnections, article not found, access denied, etc) in the road between 2PM and 5PM EST. We're in the middle of moving a set of our spools into a new building so that we have additional rack space. For those interested, we'll be doubling our retention in the next month to around 40+ days. All accounts will have access to this additional retention w/o a price increase

Well ... you occasionally have to rebuild files using the pars. The point of my post was that they were upping retention from 24 days to 40 days. Wink

lol ... and who am I supposed to supply this hardware to?

People make such a big deal about paying for downloads .. but shit .. you pay for ISP, blank discs, hardware, add in rent, bills, cellphone, car payment, insurance etc etc etc. The $15 for usenet access is but a drop in the bucket Smile
