http://www.gamershell.com/news/23598.html
Well hello all
Please delete this topic or assign to the appropriate category if needed.
Soo... what impact to do you guys think this will have onto Pc's gaming community ?
Will HD dvd drives be available for computers soon so we can enjoy the same games, size, quality like the consolors will ?
Or are we gonna be left cut out of this new technology breaching in slowly ?
Or maybe an end to piracy due to the fact that games will no longer be dvd size but 10x more or so ?
Whats your thoughts about that ?
Could be interesting....
Cheers!!

Games on PC aren't limited by DVD or CD size, never have been. That's why we install games from multiple CDs....

Xbox gets hddvd, ps3 gets blu-ray ( right ? )
So there can be another format-war...
How many pc games fulfilled dvd9 anyway? GuyGame?
I don't have any console so I dunno, but on consoles there isn't any installer and files aren't packed (at least not the same way as on pc) so they need more space.
So, imo - we (pc users) don't need new standard.

!!! This is not definite news. BillG did not say that the Xbox would be getting the hd-dvd drive. Only that it wouldnt be in the Xbox at release and that they were looking into it for future projects (not that exact wording).
The PS3 is using Bluray cause it's Sony's own format. They'd be crazy not to take advantage of the PS.
PC's will just use which ever format wins. In the early stages there will most probably be drives for both.
It's also largely irrelevant what the format is. Bigger disks dont make better games full stop.

HD-DVD needs to die before it even hits the market. The format is inferior in every single way compared to Blu-ray, and the initial disc size is barely even large enough to hold a full resolution HD movie.

If X-Box gets HD-DVD, it will only be for movie playback anyway, not to store games on it.

Imo, its a way to combat piracy although it will fail as anything thats coded can be reversed and taken apart. Also, i think its a way for the various companies to make more money off of us...what if say the new movies that come out are on different formats, not one general format and due to copyright crap and stuff, u need special dvd players to play the different media types - one dvd for blue ray, one for HD-DVD etc Thats gunna cost enough money.

Right now most publishers are hardly using dvd's so transitioning to hd-dvd games for pc is something that will take a "long" time. I would say atleast another 4 years before it happens. Until then we will just get dual layer multi dvd games which is fine. I mean not many games i know of take up 18gig's

I don't think boue-ray is the way to go ... I like HD-DVD a lot more! blue-ray is FAR more expensive, both for developers as the end-consumer (unless the game companies decide to take part of the costs for loss but I doubt that...
The costs of a blue ray disc compared with a HD-DVD are almost double. Blu ray of course has some advantages, but so has HD-DVD and in the end it will boil down to this, half the market just takes the best quality for cash value and goes with HD-DVD, the other half will go with sony just because they prefer the ps3 over the xbox 360 (or other format using hd-dvd)...
As long as this time there will be fewer fanboys (especiaaly on sony's side) I'm happy...
The xbox was far superior to the PS2 technical wise, and for a reason, ps2 ultimatly won that war (more games which was logical due to the fact that it was out longer)
This time around, the hardware specs are about the same, ps3 is better at some parts, xbox 360 is better at others, both will deliver awesome console per
formance. The fanboys (and girls) will use those advantages to get it in their heads that their console is the best and discard the advantages of the other side ...
But in the end I think the war between microsoft and sony will be a draw, they are both to big to out-compete each other and the xbox did a whole lot better then a lot of people expected.
This time around, games won't be much of a problem, even for the current xbox games are widely available and lots of sony exclusive titles aren't exclusive anymore.
So I predict a good future for both the PS3 and Xbox 360. I would like to get both but cause of budget reasons I can't (at least not at launch), as the xbox 360 comes out first I'll get that one.... I have a playstation 1, then bought a xbox, then a 2nd hand ps2 on ebay so it's time for something new
Anyway, I guess I'm ranting on and are going off topic a little
Just remember, both have advantages (blue-ray vs hd-dvd and ps3 vs xbox360 so don't be a pure fanboy )

HD-DVD is pointless, by the time it gets into fruition they will be planning the release of the next formats (which they are already developing).

The storage capacity is almost double too. HD-DVD has zero advantages from a technical standpoint, it's just easier on the companies who currently produce DVDs to switch over to HD-DVD than to Blu-ray. This translates into a somewhat higher cost, but over time that cost will become negligible; unfortunately the same can't be said for HD-DVD's drawbacks being mitigated. Shitty technology today is shitty technology forever.
Personally I hope both these "standards" are short-lived and HVD replaces them both in ~2-3 more years. HVD's initial storage of 200GB with a maximum of 1TB, and the promise of relatively cheap media is much more interesting to me than the "VHS vs. Beta 2.0" war we've got going on now.

using HD dvd etc wont stop piracy at all, until HD or blu is adopted in scene as standard for console games...which means when burners and media r affordable by all we'll have dvdrip versions. prolly for DL media or multidisk dvd5 aand i dont expect at launch many games coming out that will go over dvd9 spec. high res movies can be daownsampled considerably i doubt it'll interfere much with piracy
I'd pretty much put my money on xbox360 being chipped and raped of all security features within 3 months of retail rls date
