|
 |
....I used to do it a lot, but now; having finally experienced true, hardware decoded surround sound on a 5.1 speaker system - I am finding it difficult (shock horror) to motivate myself to download instead of buying!
I know I'm late in discovering this, but I've never been one to spend money on such frivilous things (and my broadband connection costs were always offset by how much I would save on not having to buy games, music and film )
But I've just been playing some of my downloaded movies and comparing them to the real thing on DVD and it's just not the same experience for the most part. You don't get that audio track on downloaded movies, and in a good enviroment it really does make a very excitable difference.
It's like watching a completely different movie.
It's possible that DVD clones or whatever they are called include the surround track, but due to bandwidth limitations, storage limitations and the sheer size of what you'd be downloading (it'll take some time too), I doubt I'll ever know.
What I will say though is that not every film benefits from a 5.1 sound experience - there are many films out there that are just FLAT with a capital F, capital L, capital A and capital T. Some even have the cheek of just playing the soundtrack in the rears expecting me to buy that as surround sound So it seems I can't win even if I try.
What does everyone else think? Am I just being unneccessarily fussy or do some of you also think that the audio in the film is a big part of their enjoyment too?

been there done that hehe.
i started buying all those films i really like. to me also having a real product in my hands makes a big difference too. a real box with a real booklet, dvd extras and stuff.
its not that dvds are really epensive. if a movie looks promissing i go and watch it in a cinema. if it only looks interessting i download and buy the dvd if i like it.

Hmm I wouldn't really know, since I only A Download dvdrs ONLY B No p2p, and I got a fast connection 10mb
Hmm this didn't help, did it
I try to buy the dvd's I REALLY crave, not to many nowdays. But tv series on dvd I always buy retail.
Hmm 99% of the rls are in original sound audio Ispep, get dvdrs only. I hate Dvd shrink, so watch out for the private rips, unless they are encoded trough a proper cce pass level

what do you mean with downloaded movies, xvid?
no most xvid don't have 5.1 sound unless it's a 2 cd version....
but I hardly download any xvid/divx at all, dvdr's are easy to get on BT
and yes audio makes a big difference, I got my own 5.1 logitech z5500 which sounds pretty nice in my small bedroom...
The movie with the best soundtrack must be Master And commander, that one really blew me away

I don't download DVDrs because of the filesize - it's just too demanding on bandwidth and space, not to mention time. I suppose if I really wanted to I could though.
The 24 series DVDs are also 7gbs for example.

Pretty much all new series have 5.1 now. Ispep, you problem is just your slow internet connection or your sources. You can just leech dual layer rips, the only thing you miss is the cover, but you can print that. If you just want 5.1 dolby, all dvdr have that if it's on the source.

The 24 series does have 5.1 surround sound, and it's actually good, Band of Brothers is another series off the top of my head with good surround sound too.

If I really want something, and have no patience for it, I just rent it from Blockbuster and use DVD Shrink on them... 1 hour, a blank DVD and 20 bottles of Jolt later, I'm set.
note: DVD Shrink isn't freeware. But considering your intentions, who cares

I'm using a pair of Grado SR-80 cans with mids and lows provided by 2x 70W Sony speakers hooked up to an analog Creative Sub/system out of a Creative Live! 5.1 card. Maybe those specs aren't impressive enough, but I have fairly sensitive ears and I can't tell the difference between a good (2cd) xvid, an original DVD, and a 4.7 rip. Reason for it is, I don't believe DVDShrink messes with your audio stream, just video. So in all 3 cases, the AC3 stream should remain unadultered. Unless you're comparing AC3 to DTS, which is a different codec altogether, and should be treated as such.

I buy all the films I like,
I tend to use downloading like renting.
But I am by no means a serial downloader, i only download films that I have an intrest in also, if I grabbed everthing, then I would prolly be board by now.

usually see movies in theaters first. I've probably seen 20+ so far in the theater this year. I will download a dvdrip or screener if i want to see it again and buy the dvd when it comes out.

for me, this thing, is like that those movies (u know big time) which are worth 2 see in cinema, i go the movies and watch'em, cuz thats the real thing, no other home theater system could compete for the feeling of the movies!! thats just it! happend many times i already owned the movie before movie screens, and i waited, ddint watch em, cuz thats just the way 4 me.
another thing, that there is a lot a films which are just good 4 waste some time, i wouldnt go to the movie but once i have the opporunity 2 download, just get it, right? and most of the case, it becomes clear that it wouldnt have worth 2 go and pay for it, but for free, it was okay. no bad feelings about it.
so its like this in a nut shell

Well, I like downloading movies...cuz usually if i download a movie, and I like it, i buy it and add it to the rest of my dvds
Im not gunna go spend money on renting a movie or buying it since I dont know if Im going to like it or not and i already pay for an internet connection...it just seems logical ya know? Too many shit movies, videogames, music etc out nowadays to risk wasting ur money buying a certain type of media that may fuckin suck...its like my buddy bringing over a new cd he bought, letting me hear it, and then I go buy if I like.
